Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel has been showing us training sessions and playtime with his yellow Labrador puppy, Drake. This video, shot a few weeks ago when it was still winter at the ranch, continues the training with a real pheasant....

Hottubtimemachine_smallposter Alice_in_wonderland_depp_movie_poster7 Telluride's Nugget Theatre has two films on the program this week, Friday, April 16-22: "Alice in Wonderland" and "Hot Tub Time Machine". In addition, on Thursday, April 22, the Telluride Film Festival will present "The Ghost Writer".

"Alice" (Rated PG) is Tim Burton's take on the Lewis Carroll classic. In Burton's hands, this is not your mother's bedtime story for tots. This is the second week in Telluride for "Alice".

To get a handle on "Hot Tub Time Machine" we need to accept the  possibility that a ski vacation hot tub can turn back the clock, give a bunch of buddies a big do-over. It's rated R for the reasons you probably already guessed. Not "War and Peace" but probably fun in the right frame of mind. And the cast includes John Cusack and Rob Corddry.

Theghostwriter_smallposter The Telluride Film Festival offering is "The Ghost" (rated PG-13), which is the story of a ghost writer called on to re-write history for a British prime minister, who may remind one of Tony Blair. There probably is a price to pay for not telling the approved version. Roman Polanski directs.

It's graduation day for Sam, a young golden retriever who has been training with Ted Hoff at Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel. In this video Ted puts Sam through his paces, emphasizing the necessity for doing the training in a calm atmosphere. Ted also...

IMGP1105 2 Another great thing about being in Telluride: even the mundane can be a mini-adventure. Perhaps the errand is in town and could as easily be accomplished on a bike. In a month there will a number of choices about which route to take: quickly on the bike path, almost as quickly on the dirt track along the San Miguel, or a real adventure (and a fair amount more time) up Mill Creek Road and down the Waterline. See what I mean?

Aliceinwonderland_smallcharacter Telluride's Nugget Theatre will show "Alice in Wonderland" for the week of Friday, April 9 - Thursday, April 15. Showtimes are 7:30 pm nightly. The movie is rated PG.

"Alice" may never really have been a children's tale, and this Tim Burton version is decidedly dark, hence the PG rating. Mia Wasikowska has been praised for her Alice and the versatile Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter. All the familiar Lewis Carroll characters are here, but Alice has been reimagined as a 19 year old, and that has implications. Should be intereting.

Easter Sunday was a great day on the mountain at Telluride. First, the skiing was great. I did a few cruising runs on Lift 5 with Susan and our friends Lawrie and Sheila. At the top of the lift we chatted with Dylan and Dawn and their young kids. There were also some wild costumes in evidence, so the people watching was fun as well. Hawkeye was, guess what, a pirate. Hard to believe the lifts will be still tomorrow, another ski season done.

KOTO is Telluride's radio link to the world, a non-underwritten, community-supported, commercial-free station, nurtured and embraced by the Telluride community. In addition, KOTO sponsors community events year 'round. Friday, April 2, KOTO put on its annual end-of-ski season street dance on Colorado Avenue, with the bandstand next to the San Miguel County courthouse.

The day didn't begin auspiciously- the wind was howling and the heavy snow was blowing horizontally. It didn't look good. But by early afternoon the clouds broke, the wind settled, and by showtime, it was a delightful time to dance, listen, enjoy the company of friends and strangers, let the kids run. In short it was a great community event.

Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel sits at an elevation of about 6000 feet, nearly half a mile lower than Telluride. So the winters there are typically a little milder than up here in the high country. But there was still enough snow last month...

According to the calendar we're two weeks into Spring, but here in the high country, here in Telluride Winter has a way of hanging on. Calendar be damned. On an errand this morning, walking east on Gregory, armed with only my iPhone for a...
