Poster Poster-1 Telluride's Nugget Theatre is screening two movies the week of Friday, July 30 to Thursday, August 5. "Knight and Day" is a holdover from last week. The action movie stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, and is rated PG13.

"Despicable Me" is an animated film with some great voices, an improbable super-villain, three orphan girls in search of a dad, and a plot to steal the moon. What could possibly go wrong? It is rated PG.

Gina and the ladies, Lizard Head It's been a busy week in Telluride, capped by a get-together among friends last night: good food, good wine, good conversation. As a result, Susan and I slept in a bit this morning. I was just getting ready to take Gina the Dog out for her morning walk. Susan, checking email: "Susan Dalton wants to know if we want to join her and Bettie Hastings for a hike up at Lizard Head. Maybe see if we can find some early mushrooms?"

Sounded better than whatever I had in mind, so I agreed. There was still time to get Gina out for a short walk, and start the Sunday morning chores. Soon Susan picked us up, then stopped to get Bettie, and in a few more minutes we were out of the car at the Cross Mountain trailhead, and on our way, Gina the Dog happy to be leading the pack.

Ride the Divide Logo-3 Thetwilightsagaeclipse_smallposter If you missed "Toy Story 3" or "Knight and Day" at Telluride's Nugget Theatre last week, you have another chance. See last week's post.

New at the Nugget this week is "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse", rated PG13. Set in Seattle, this third film in a  series pits a 109-year-old vampire against a werewolf for the affections of a young woman. Lots of vampires around the past few seasons, and some werewolves to add a little heat to the chill of the undead probably is a good idea.

On Thursday, July 29,  Paragon/Bootdoctors presents "Ride the Divide", a feature length documentary about the longest mountain bike race.

IMGP1331 It's so easy in Telluride to return to old familiar trails for our morning hikes- with so many possibilities right out our door it's hard to think about trying something new. So Susan was surprised when I suggested she try Keystone Gorge for the first time.

I had done the trail earlier in the spring with the runoff causing a roar that drowned out all other sound. This morning the falls along the San Miguel River certainly could be heard, but they didn't completely overpower birdsong and rustle of wind in the aspens.

Thekaratekid_smallposter The Nugget Theatre in beautiful downtown Telluride is busy this week, primarily because Nothing is happening. The Nothing Festival, that is. To celebrate Nothing, the Nugget is showing "Karate Kid" 5 times for nothing on Friday and Saturday, July 16, 17, including a Saturday matinee. Boy, that takes me back; I mean the Saturday matinee!

Because the schedule is a bit complicated, be sure to check below the fold for movietimes and the Nugget website for reviews and trailers.

"Karate Kid" is a remake of the 1984 classic, and largely follows the plot line of the original: displaced kid, young love, a bully, a kindly maintenance man with a secret. This time KK is set in China, but apparently the on-location shooting is an enhancement to the film, Jackie Chan is appropriate as the kung-fu master, and according to Roger Ebert, the movie can stand on its own. Rated R.

Gina, Eider Creek Small towns have the reputation of "Not much to do". In Telluride? Here, the opposite is true, so much so that writing, publishing and creating the visuals for Telluride Inside... and Out (not that I'm the only one putting in those hours: Susan works harder than I do.) sometimes means I don't spend as much time outside as I would like.

Since mid-May, the schedule has been wild, what with Mountainfilm in Telluride, Telluride Balloon Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Wine Festival, Telluride Musicfest, Telluride Yoga Festival, KOTO's Doo Dah, Playwrights Festival. And this doesn't even include lectures at the Wilkinson Library, the Palm Theatre, the occasional dinner out with friends, a movie at the Nugget Theatre. One night last week we went to five! events, and still had send regrets to one or two.

Ted Hoff at Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel likes to train dogs in groups, when it's appropriate. This video shows Sophie and friends working/playing/training, all the while seemingly having a great time. Even work looks like fun at Cottonwood....
