Imaginethat_smallposter Thehangover_smallposter2 "Imagine That" and "The Hangover" are the movies at Telluride's Nugget Theatre for the week of July 17-23.

In "Imagine That', Evan Danielson (Eddie Murphy) finds it difficult to balance being a father with being an up-and-comer in business in Denver. Fortunately, he is saved by the advice from his 7-year-old daughter's imaginary friends. (Rated an easy going PG)

"Hangover" (Rated R for language, sexual situations, nudity) takes place in Las Vegas, where the bridegroom's three friends wake up after the blowout bachelor party to find a tiger in the bathroom, a six-month-old baby in the closet, and no groom. Can they unravel the mystery in time to find Doug, and get him to the church on time? Stay tuned.

Last Saturday, July 11, Kimberly and John Kirkendoll hosted a party to support Sparky Productions' Telluride Playwrights' Festival. Jennie Franks' event is in its third year, and the quality of the theatre is getting better with each year. There is one more evening to...

IMG_3529 Nick Day, internationally known actor, sometime Telluride near-local, friend, has been in Telluride for about two weeks this time around. Nick is a key element in Jennie Franks' Telluride Playwrights' Festival, on- going, hosting actors' workshops, participating in readings. It goes on.

Nick was on hand for the 4th of July in Telluride, and has consented to let TIO publish the column he wrote for folks back home in England. Read it and ask yourself: "Am I/ are we really doing all we could to preserve this place we call home, Telluride, the wider world?"

Thanks, Nick.

I’ve just had the privilege of spending Independence Day in small town America. It was an exciting and – unexpectedly – moving day. It celebrates the astonishing courage and determination of a people in defence of their rights, and brought the community together in a proud demonstration of what they are and what they stand for.

Up_smallposter2 Yearone_smallteaser The Nugget Theatre in Telluride for the week of July 10-16, is showing "UP", an animation from Disney/Pixar (rated PG for some peril and action), and "Year One",  (rated PG-13, for language, crude sexual situations).

"UP" is the story of an old man (even older than I am) who has never had any adventure in his life, and now is coerced into adventure by a young boy.

"Year One" has two hunter-gatherers off to see the world. Much of the movie is set in ancient Sodom. Perhaps you can guess some of the rest.

For reviews and trailers, see the Nugget website. Also, note the addition of a Saturday matinee for "UP".

IMG_3588 I had the unique opportunity to talk to a living legend in my Telluride living room on July 3. Jacques Parker had agreed to an interview, and what a treat to hear from one of the participants what it was like to be at Camp Hale (near Leadville, CO for the uninitiated) for training, how he came to be a combat artist, about the camaraderie among the men of the 10th Mountain Division during the Second World War, and generally to have a good conversation with a real gentleman.

Fourteen years ago, Beth and George Gage, Telluride locals and well known documentary filmmakers made "Fire on the Mountain" about the 10th. The film is being screened at 6:00 pm, Monday, July 6, at the Sheridan Opera House. The movie is the highlight of Telluride Mountainfilm's Summer fundraiser.

Pellham Telluride's Nugget Theatre has one more showing of Disney's "Earth" on Friday, July 3 at 6:00 pm. The movie is rated G and is the story of one year on Earth, with an emphasis on its wild creatures.

The rest of week the movie is "The Taking of Pelham 123", rated R, with Denzel Washington as a New York subway dispatcher with an intimate knowledge of New York underground against criminal genius, John Travolta, in a race against time to save the hostages aboard the subway train.

For trailers and reviews, see the Nugget website. Please note revised showtimes.

Thursday night's closer for Telluride Bluegrass was David Byrne. OK, skeptics, maybe David Byrne doesn't represent bluegrass for you, but what a show! Everyone was dressed in white- David, the band, the three very energetic dancers, and at the end of the evening the crowd,...

The 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Festival kicked off Thursday morning with a great set by two artists who really need no introduction to Telluride audiences. Tim O'Brien has performed at TBF for over 25 years, and the 36th running is Jerry Douglas' 25th appearance. Gentlemen, it...
