Telluride's Nugget Theatre holds over "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" (rated R) this week. Lisbeth Salander is back in the series by Stieg Larsson.
The early movie all week is "Megamind" (rated PG), an animated feature starring a brilliant failure of an arch villain. When he defeats his super-hero nemesis, chaos reigns.

For the week of Friday, November 19 through Thursday, November 25 (Thanksgiving), Telluride's Nugget Theatre is "all Salander, all the time." The week starts out with a Sheep Mountain Alliance sponsored film about nuclear danger in the post-Cold War period, "Countdown to Zero." The rest of the week is devoted to Swedish writer Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy and his counter-culture heroine, Lisbeth Salander. Should be an interesting week.

A few days after our return to Telluride from our Fall travels, Susan and I needed to spend some time at our place in Denver. Not that being in Denver is a chore: our home here is beautiful and there are friends we enjoy being with.
Yesterday I decided to do a couple of things that had been on my mind, but time is usually a little short when we come to Denver. I hadn't thought about it specifically, but as it turned out, my two stops were very much related.
The first stop was at Boulder's Cool Energy. I had a great conversation with President/CEO Sam Weaver last July, and wanted to check in. Cool Energy is working on an electrical power generation system using low heat from solar and waste heat sources. It was fascinating to see the working model of the Stirling heat engine that is central to the process. Weaver was away on business but Leslie Weise, Vice President of Business Development did a good job showing me the operation and catching me up on recent developments. Thanks also to the engineering staff for showing off the equipment.
Telluride's Nugget Theatre is showing "Secretariat" (rated PG) and "Hereafter" (rated PG-13) the week of Friday, November 12 through Thursday, November 18, with a Telluride Film Festival screening of "Waiting for Superman" (PG)as the late show on Thursday.
"Secretariat" tells the story of the great racehorse who won the Triple Crown in 1973, the first such win in 25 years. Secretariat was thought to be strongest at shorter lengths, but won the Belmont by an astonishing 31 lengths. The film faithfully follows the true story.
Clint Eastwood directs "Hereafter", probably a good enough reason to see a movie that speculates about what happens when we die. The movie isn't didactic on the subject of an afterlife.
The Telluride Film Festival presents "Waiting for Superman", a documentary about what is wrong with the educational system in the US, and issues a call to action to help the situation.

I woke up in my own bed in Telluride this morning, wondering where I was, taking a few moments to calculate the best way to the bathroom. Susan and I left Athens November 5, the end of three fascinating weeks on mainland Greece and Crete. We have stories, photos, memories of beautiful places and a number of new friends. (Also a few more wrap up posts.)
Our last night in Greece was in Glyfada, now an upscale suburb of Athens. I remember Glyfada as a quiet seaside village from my time living there while on temporary assignment flying with Olympic Airways in 1972. I tried unsuccessfully to find the street where we lived; the small houses set in spacious yards with grape arbors and lemon trees have been replaced by blocks of new apartment buildings. The one small harbor with a few sailboats and mostly wooden fishing craft has morphed into three marinas with mostly pleasure craft. Time marches on, and it had been 38 years since I lived there. The morning of our departure our driver, Nikolas, seemed genuinely sad to see us go.
Telluride's Nugget Theatre has one film on the program for the week of Friday, November 5 through Thursday, November 11, "Red".
"Red" stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich: good cast with guns. Should be interesting. Rated PG13.

After two wonderful weeks on Crete, Telluride Inside... and Out was back on the Greek mainland. Our driver, Nikolas Vogiatzakis, picked us up at the Athens airport early Sunday morning and we headed north, bound for Meteora.
What you first need to know about Meteora is that the region once hosted about 20 monasteries, each perched on top of its own rock monolith. There are now six monasteries one can visit, and as we look at them from below, one question comes to mind: "How did they do it?"
Living in Telluride is about adventure. Readers of Telluride Inside... and Out know that Ben Clark and friends, including Erik and Chris Dalton, are in Nepal. David Byars will be corresponding from Ghana. Susan and I are currently on the island of Crete. There are plenty of adventures available in our backyard in Telluride, but Telluriders seem to be a wandering clan.
One of the reasons Susan and I travel is for the opportunity to meet new friends. Our first morning in Heraklion, Crete, we met 27-month-old Odysseas Pavlides, and through him his parents, Dr. Lefteris Pavlides and his wife Stephanie, both architects in Rhode Island.
