Around Telluride

TCAH - Tag Holiday Bazaar 2009 Did I just put "Xmas" and "Telluride" in the same sentence and we still have a month of days before Halloween? However, planning ahead for the holidays is not a bad thing, especially when a cast of thousands ( ok, closer to 50) is involved.

The Telluride Council for the Arts and Humanities, the event sponsor, is looking for artists and craftspeople to sell their work at this year’s Telluride Artisans Guild Bazaar. Friday, November 5, is the deadline to register.

Fall Tilt Poster 8 As aspen trees blanket Telluride's mountains in gold, the big question is who wins the gold (a cash purse) at the second annual Fall Tilt in the Mountain Village.

Fall Tilt marks the last Yee! Haw! of the summer season for gonzo bikers eager to test their skills on a blistering downhill course. The event takes places Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25  in the Mountain Village Bike Park, four adjacent downhill trails that are to be used simultaneously for the race from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Terrain varies from rocky and technical riding on the World Cup course to flowing and slower riding on the "recovery" trail. (The rider gets to name his or her poison.) To keep the course safe for riders and spectators alike, the race course is taped and marked, closed to the general public and patrolled.Tech support tents and support staff will be available near the vicinity of the finish line; riders are responsible for their own repair and equipment replacement.

Greenhouse Oh to be a student again at the Telluride High School. Like many of my age, I sometimes get nostalgic about past, but it is the present at THS I find truly exciting. Since Fall 2008, the Telluride High School has been offering ISPs or Intensive Study Periods, a two-week immersion into a subject chosen by the student. ISPs are a chance at hands-on, experiential learning designed to integrate learning styles and subject matter.

ISPs start on September 27, 2010. The list of options follows.

Massage  Pardon the pun but I could not resist. Yes. The 500 Hour Massage Therapy Certification program is back at the Ah Haa School for the Arts this fall. The Connecting Point School of Massage will be starting this unsurpassed hands-on experience October 18th and it will run through April 6th. What a great way to spend your winter!

The objective of this 500-Hour Massage Therapy Certificate Program is to teach students how to become dynamic, effective and successful massage therapists. Which all of us massage lovers will thank you for. Listen to Susan Viebrock's interview with the Connecting Point's Caycee Ames for more details on this program, which is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork for entrance to the national exam for massage certification.

Carrera If any of you happened to see an outrageous vintage sports car – or two or ten or twenty - cruising over Dallas Divide last Tuesday, you were witnessing the running of the 2010 Colorado Grand, a 1,000 mile, five-day driving tour of pre-1961 sports cars that takes place each year during the third week of September and journeys over some of Colorado’s most spectacular mountain passes and scenic byways.

Since its inception in 1989, the Colorado Grand has generated more than $2.8 million via donations and auctions for Colorado charities, local organizations and foundations, as well as set up college assistant funds for students in Hotchkiss, Paonia, Ridgway and Salida.

Shawna_rebecca I love when I can introduce new artists to this great community. Especially when their talent is immense and their medium is unique. Encaustic and wax has been a sought-after medium workshop request at the Ah Haa School for the Arts and I am proud to say we have answered the call! HOT WAX / COLD WAX will explore the differences and similarities between these two methods. This 3 day workshop, taking place October 8 -10, 2010, will be taught jointly by visiting artists Shawna Moore (encaustic artist) and Rebecca Crowell (who uses cold wax medium with oils) and is a unique opportunity to work side by side with these two renowned artists. Through this introduction, you will discover the brilliant colors, evocative surfaces and sheer pleasure that comes while painting abstractly with wax.

2004-01-154a Thursday, September 16, starting at 5:30 p.m., the Telluride Historical Museum hosts a Pub Crawl to kick off the 17th annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival.

Towards the end of the Victorian era, Telluride was a mining town with a work hard, play harder ethic. In the town's wild and wooly past, a person could not swing a shotgun without hitting at least one of about 37 watering holes. Throughout Prohibition, the fact Telluride was hard to get to served arm benders well: thirsty people could drink anywhere, including at the Courthouse.
