Nemirovposter2010 Meredith Nemirov is a familiar name in the Telluride region. But the artist is also on the national radar. Nemirov has shown her work at the Brooklyn Museum, Yeshiva University Museum, The American Museum of Immigration and more. There have been more recent shows in Denver, both at the airport and at the Red Line Gallery.

In 2008, Meredith Nemirov was awarded a residency at the world-famous Anderson Ranch outside Aspen. In April 2010, a grant enabled her to spend a month as Artist in Residence at the prestigious Vermont Studio Center, a kind of think tank for artists of all persuasions, including painters, sculptors, print-makers, and photographers, 50 in all, who live in this artistic community and work in private studios. While in Vermont, without the pressure of having to produce yet another major one-person show, Nemirov created the very mixed body of work that will be on display Thursday, October 7, at the Stronghouse Studios, 283 South Fir, for the October Art Walk.

IMG_7909 Telluride Inside... and Out immediately called Shlomi Eldar's "Precious Life" one of the most powerful films we saw at the Telluride Film Festival last month.

"Precious Life" is a documentary about a Palestinian family trying to save the life of their infant son in an Israeli hospital. Susan had only a few moments to chat with Shlomi after the screening, as he was being rushed off to another event. Shlomi promised to take some time after the dust settled (he was headed for the Toronto Film Festival immediately after Telluride) to do an interview with Telluride Inside... and Out. This article, conducted by email, is the result of that conversation.

S_1 Susan Viebrock: At any point in your life did you imagine yourself directing a major documentary?

Shlomi Eldar: I started this project only because I couldn't get into Gaza Strip after Gilad Shalit has been kidnapped and after the blocked of Gaza by Israel. I had to find new stories so when I have got the e-mail from Dr. Raz Somech I said to myself "let's try and make a piece about it, it might be interesting." Only when one single person donated the whole amount of money I found myself following the process and the journey of saving Muhammad. Something inside me told me that it can become a film. In short I didn’t think or mean to make a major documentary and I didn’t realized that I could take 3 years working on that film.

Easya_smallposter The movie for the week of October 1 through 7 at Telluride's Nugget Theatre is "Easy A", rated PG-13. Olive (Emma Stone) invents a weekend tryst rather than admit she spen the weekend home alone. The resulting rumor is used to elevate her social status, using a modern adaptation of the Scarlet Letter. "Easy A" has a good cast and critics have commented positivley on the intelligence of the comedy. See below for movie times and the Nugget website for trailers and reviews.

Space.odyssey

The Telluride Film Festival doesn't mess around. No fluff. Not ever. Just culturally significant films that also entertain. Considered one of the most influential of all sci-fi films ever, and one of the most controversial,"2001: A Space Odyssey," (1968, 141 minutes) opens the 2010/2011 season of  the Telluride Film Festival's Sunday at the Palm series. The screening takes place Sunday, September 26, 4 p.m. at the Michael D. Palm Theatre.


"2001: A Space Odyssey"  is a meditation on man's inventiveness, but it comes with a warning label. (Think "Hal.") James Cameron owes a debt to Stanley Kubrick, whose film is the daddy of special effects, surrealism, and scientific realism in cinema.

Sunday flag I’ve been a fan of the Telluride Blues & Brews Festivals for years. I’ve actually watched the event morph from a few tasting tents on Colorado Avenue to a full-blown, internationally renowned music festival with some of the best musicians on the planet, fabulous microbrews and a venue that simply blows the socks off most other blues festivals - outside of New Orleans, that is. And the 2010 TB&BF was no exception. It was, in fact, one of the best ever.

  Graced with magnificent, cerulean blue skies, mountainsides of glowing, golden aspen and temperatures in the 80’s, the stage was set for a weekend of stellar performance, outrageous weather and ecstatic experience.  Thursday evening opened the festivities with a free sunset concert at the Mountain Village Plaza featuring the Gold Kings – a talented local band of “brothers” – followed by on-the-rise British blues guitarist Matt Schofield – wow!

Theotherguys_smallteaser Theamerican_smallposter Autumn has come to Telluride, Festival season has about ended, the days are shorter- a perfect time to head to the Nugget Theatre for an evening's entertainment.

George Clooney is "The American" (rated R), an assassin taking a little time off in a village in Italy. His quiet time is interrupted by people who seem to want to do him in. What's love got to do with it?

"The Other Guys" (rated PG13) hit the streets, mismatched cops thrown together by circumstance. Expect some violence, some comedy from Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as the inept duo.

Ah Haa School for the Arts

Massage  Pardon the pun but I could not resist. Yes. The 500 Hour Massage Therapy Certification program is back at the Ah Haa School for the Arts this fall. The Connecting Point School of Massage will be starting this unsurpassed hands-on experience October 18th and it will run through April 6th. What a great way to spend your winter!

Comprised of Swedish and advanced massage techniques, anatomy and physiology, business and ethics, the program offers a variety of healing modalities, such as Reiki, Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Spa Therapies. The objective of this 500-Hour Massage Therapy Certificate Program is to teach students how to become dynamic, effective and successful massage therapists. Unknown Telluride is a nonstop photo op: every moment a Kodak moment. The region is also a stone's throw away from four National Parks, several national monuments and state parks (Hovenweep, Dead Horse Point, and the Black Canyon.) And when it's not a world-class ski resort, Telluride is a festival town, where different tribes gather to celebrate all kinds of music, mushrooms, fine art, film, and the natural world. A Telluride Photo Festival? The event that was a giant "Duh!" is an idea whose time has finally come thanks to a young entrepreneur, Eric Moore, with support from Telluride's Ah Haa School for the Arts.
