Art of Being a Woman Month continues at the Ah Haa School for the Arts. And we hope to see you here at the school this Thursday the 13th for LUNAFEST, the national traveling film festival of award-winning films by, for and about women. Join us for a night of inspiring films and company while supporting two great causes, the national Breast Cancer Fund and our very own San Miguel Resouce Center.

And the fun continues next week with our 2nd Annual BRAvo! This was a hugely successful event last year where the community got their creative juices flowing and helped raise money for the San Miguel Resource Center. Over 30 bras were decorated and auctioned off in a live and silent auction. The live auction bras were sported by some of Telluride's finest service men on the bar at the Sheridan. These brave men strutted the bras proudly, reminding us all that breast cancer effects both men and woman and is a disease that almost everyone has been personally effectd by.

Thoughout October, the Ah Haa School for the Arts will be saluting the courageous women of San Miguel County and the organizations that support them by showcasing women in the arts. Art of Being a Woman Month will present a month full of activities, events and special exhibtions all celebrating the female spirit.

Telluride's very own, Julee Hutchison will start the month off with a discounted two day oil painting workshop, Portraits of a Woman, for beginner and intermediate painters. Capture the beauty of the female form and face in the richness of oil paint, during this fun and non-intimidating class. Julee will discuss and demonstrate composition, anatomy, mixing of colors, the approach to a blank canvas, and the importances of “edges”. During the lunch break we will look at photos of famous painters and discuss the factors of their successful paintings. This course empowers the apprehensive creator to engage with a rewarding medium, by receiving one-on-one instructions as they paint from a female model.

Well, the leaves are turning and this is our last big weekend before town is quiet. But just because town is slowing down, doesn't mean the Ah Haa School is. Our new fall/winter catalog is online and at the printer. The catalog has a great line up of workshops and events for adults and kids and showcases the beautiful work of local artist, Judy Haas on the cover.

Don't forget that next month is The Art of Being A Woman Month where the Ah Haa School celebrates the female spirit in the arts. The school will once again host Lunafest, the national touring women’s short film festival, a handful of workshops and last year's every popular BRAvo Auction. Be a part of BRAvo this year and decorate a bra to help raise awareness about breast cancer. Bras will be available at the school starting next Friday the 23rd. Partial proceeds will benefit the San Miguel Resource Center.

Ahhaa_june Hello Telluride. Though the weather does not reflect it, the summer season is starting! The Ah Haa School has quite the lineup this summer of dynamic local artist exhibitions, both in Daniel Tucker Gallery and our East Gallery. I am proud to announce that this June we will be featuring the photography of Carl Marcus and the oil paintings of Susan McCormick. Both will remind you of the beauty this amazing region holds and that spring is coming!

Carl Marcus has a true talent for capturing nature's awe-inspiring beauty. A constant supporter of the Ah Haa School, I was first introduced to Carl while working on my first auction several years ago. He had donated one of his "magical landscapes" and it did indeed take my breath away. When I asked him about how he is able to capture this beauty, he replied, "The images try to recreate the aspect of vast spaces in unfolding nature that literally take away ones breath; and attempt to convey them to others; not so much the detail, but the underlying immensity of the micro and macro." He added that always having his camera with him and being open to what is happening around him, are the times that those images present themselves and he is able to capture and share them with everyone. Thank you Carl, for being open! Other current works will be displayed with these magical landscapes. Which by the way will be 5 foot images. This is a show not to be missed!

Massage  Pardon the pun but I could not resist. Yes. The 500 Hour Massage Therapy Certification program is back at the Ah Haa School for the Arts this fall. The Connecting Point School of Massage will be starting this unsurpassed hands-on experience October 18th and it will run through April 6th. What a great way to spend your winter!

Comprised of Swedish and advanced massage techniques, anatomy and physiology, business and ethics, the program offers a variety of healing modalities, such as Reiki, Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Spa Therapies. The objective of this 500-Hour Massage Therapy Certificate Program is to teach students how to become dynamic, effective and successful massage therapists. Which all of us massage lovers will thank you for. Listen to Susan Viebrock's interview with the Connecting Point's Caycee Ames for more details on this program, which is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork for entrance to the national exam for massage certification.

Shawna_rebecca I love when I can introduce new artists to this great community. Especially when their talent is immense and their medium is unique. Encaustic and wax has been a sought-after medium workshop request at the Ah Haa School for the Arts and I am proud to say we have answered the call! HOT WAX / COLD WAX will explore the differences and similarities between these two methods. This 3 day workshop, taking place October 8 -10, 2010, will be taught jointly by visiting artists Shawna Moore (encaustic artist) and Rebecca Crowell (who uses cold wax medium with oils) and is a unique opportunity to work side by side with these two renowned artists. Through this introduction, you will discover the brilliant colors, evocative surfaces and sheer pleasure that comes while painting abstractly with wax.

IndianSummer_wilsonrange-386x0 Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. It brings to mind new clothes, crisp blank notebooks and an abundance of newly sharpened pencils. While school is part of my past (thank god) I am happy that the Ah Haa School for the Arts still supplies it's own fall adventures that allow me to grow creatively and not be graded on.

I know that when I go hiking and exploring in our amazing Telluride backyard, I bring my camera and try my damnedest to capture the scenes surrounding me. And I have to admit I fail miserably. This is not to say that my pictures don't capture the beauty but they sure don't capture the depth of the beauty and the majesty of the landscape. So, I am excited to say that National Geographic photographer Dave Edwards is back this fall to give me some tips in making a strong photograph. Capturing dynamic compositions, learning about light, subject content and artistic elements are sure to help me blow my friends and family away. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and if I can truly learn to capture where I live, I will hopefully leave people as speechless as I am taking the picture when they view the picture.
