December 2009

Towns across America get tricked out for the holidays. The thing that makes Telluride so very special is what goes on behind the lights and tinsel. Case in point: tonight.  Tonight Jeb Berrier, Buff Hooper and Ashley Boling performed "The Complete Works of...

Thursday night, December 17, was a busy night in Telluride. The snowboard World Cup is in town and the Peaks Resort hosted a big party for guests and locals; the Telluride Historical Museum showed the recently completed "We Skied It", featuring Senior Mahoney; artist Susan Sales had a wonderful opening at the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art.

Meanwhile, a large audience heard astronaut Neil Armstrong speak about the changes at the Telluride Airport; John Horn, talking about the corporate thinking that went into the original planning; Board Chairman (and former Telluride mayor) John Micetic telling how it all got done. But it was vice chairman Ed Roufa who brought down the house, presenting John with a plaque which documented the new name for the airport: Telluride Regional Airport at Micetic Field

Ted Hoff of Cottonwood Ranch and Kennel  showed us a retrieving kitty on an earlier video. But how about the most basic of commands: Sit, Stay. Ted demonstrates that with patience Kitty can do that too. So much for conventional wisdom- "cats can't...

The World Cup in Telluride could be a life-changing event for snowboardcross racer Mick Dierdorff.  Only 18, Mick is racing for the opportunity to become the first homegrown snowboarder from the town of Steamboat, Colorado, to make an Olympic team. 525_v1 Used to be women who sought membership in this men's club had better be butch. No more. Thanks to Mark Galbo of the Telluride Rock and Roll Academy, the girls in the band are preening, strutting rock stars.

On Saturday night, December 19, 8 p.m., The 525s – Suzanne Cheavens, Suz Remec, Barbel Hacke, Cindy Carver, and Molly Papier – plan to rock out - wait a minute, in the Program Room at The Wilkinson Public Library. Yep, the Library, the perfect place to make noise.

Winter Solstice and Christmas South of the Border

MexXmas It’s mid-December and I’m headed to Mexico. My husband and I rather suddenly decided to spend a couple months south of the border in Baja California – shining example of how “no major planets retrograde” can manifest action. (Mars goes retrograde on Dec. 20th, so this will change.)

I’m planning to write and post columns via WiFi along the way, but quien sabe? I know from past experience that internet service is spotty and unreliable in Baja. So, I’m posting early this week and hoping it all works out.

Feliz Navidad!
