A little stork is an avatar for Jeanne B. de Sainte Marie, one of 10 author/illustrators whose magical images will be on display at the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art starting July 28 in a show entitled "From Beasts to Babar: Ten Children's Illustrators."

La cigogne de Noël (The Christmas Stork, Editions du Bastberg, France 2000) is the tale of a stork that decides not to fly south with his peers. He wants to see snow. But how will he eat and stay warm? Through his trials and triumphs, Little Stork learns the rewards of following a dream.

How do big-time art shows happen in a small town like Telluride? Start with a visionary.

In the winter of 1985, Telluride was beginning to percolate anew: entrepreneurs starting snapping up property; among them, Will Thompson, who bought the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art space the day after he and wife Hilary arrived in town to ski.

Magical works by Craft, Schultheis & Swire

Rob image Among Telluride's many talented writers, Rob Schultheis is an alpha male. In his columns in the Watch, and in his many books, Schultheis reclaims that turf over and over again with steady barrage of satiric, muscular, insightful, brash, bold prose. But forget all the you know about Rob. Well, don't forget it. Amplify it. Did you know Rob turned down a an art scholarship to college because he wanted to live in the Rockies? Rob the writer is also Rob the painter. "Roads to Xanadu" features the work of Rob, his wife, Nancy Craft, and their friend, Renee Swire. The show goes up in the Daniel Tucker Gallery at Telluride's Ah Haa School for the Arts the first Thursday of the month, July 7, 5 – 7 p.m. The opening corresponds to Telluride Arts' First Thursday Art Walk, when galleries and other venues around town stay open late to strut their stuff. What makes the Compassion Festival a festival rather than a conference or symposium? The short answer is that a festival is more fun than a conference. There is art, there is food, there are things to look at, touch, hear, smell and taste.

The Compassion Festival, to be hosted this coming weekend by the Telluride Institute, may not have all those tempting ingredients, but a good number of them.

Lady in Black Malcolm "Skip" Liepke's second one-man show opens at the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art, 130 East Colorado Avenue, Thursday, July 7, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., in sync with Telluride Arts' First Thursday Art Walk, showing off the "Best Of" Telluride's fine art and retail scene.

If you missed it, the artist's first show was a doozy: wall-to-wall pulchritude and sensuality confronting us with looks that would melt steel, rendered by a  painter who is an unapologetic realist.

East Valley Icon Getting a jump on Telluride Art's upcoming First Thursday Art Walk, July 7, and at the tail end of the Sheridan Arts Foundation's Telluride Plein Air, an outdoor art show featuring American Impressionists that ends at 4 p.m. July 3, Lustre Gallery presents the work of Marshall Noice. The artist's reception is Sunday, July 3, 4 – 6 p.m., 171 South Pine Street, a great excuse for those who can't get enough light in their lives to continue to wave their plein air banner high.

Marshall Noice never met a sky or a tree he did not like. For 36 years, the artist has been obsessed by landscapes. What we see in his work resembles the outside world the artist depicts much in the way a guitar case resembles a guitar: Noice is not painting a grove of trees for instance. He is depicting his emotional response to a grove of trees, which makes him an Expressionist for those who require an "ist" or an "ism." Noice is an Expressionist with Impressionistic flourishes and a Fauve sense of color.

Tracy at DAM The Denver Art Museum's current offering is a mud pie for the senses. With the most basic of themes, earth, this global exhibition brings together time and place to reveal how the artist deals with dirt. Curators from around the museum present their earthenwares in ways that honor the simultaneous beauty and function of the Coors Porcelain Company's vessels, the aesthic simplicity and eternal popularity of the blue & white ceramic, and the exquisite work of Native American potter, Nampeyo, who built a name for herself and a family legacy through her creations.

kicker: Lemler teaches "Light & the Figurative Subject in Oil"

Nude Telluride's Ah Haa School continues its summer immersions program with an intensive in "Light & the Figurative in Oil." The class is scheduled for Thursday, July 7 –  Sunday, July 10. The instructor is Robert Lemler.

We hold these truths to be self evident.... Art and light became twins at the end of the 19th century with the emergence of the Impressionists, but throughout art history, artists have used light to direct the eye of the viewer. Rembrandt, for instance, routinely lit eyes, the windows of the soul, and hands. Vermeer transformed light into dots, blobs and dashes of white paint that danced in the foreground of his paintings, suggesting the eye land here or there. (And then go goofy about the details in the overall image.)

Ahhaa_june Hello Telluride. Though the weather does not reflect it, the summer season is starting! The Ah Haa School has quite the lineup this summer of dynamic local artist exhibitions, both in Daniel Tucker Gallery and our East Gallery. I am proud to announce that this June we will be featuring the photography of Carl Marcus and the oil paintings of Susan McCormick. Both will remind you of the beauty this amazing region holds and that spring is coming!

Carl Marcus has a true talent for capturing nature's awe-inspiring beauty. A constant supporter of the Ah Haa School, I was first introduced to Carl while working on my first auction several years ago. He had donated one of his "magical landscapes" and it did indeed take my breath away. When I asked him about how he is able to capture this beauty, he replied, "The images try to recreate the aspect of vast spaces in unfolding nature that literally take away ones breath; and attempt to convey them to others; not so much the detail, but the underlying immensity of the micro and macro." He added that always having his camera with him and being open to what is happening around him, are the times that those images present themselves and he is able to capture and share them with everyone. Thank you Carl, for being open! Other current works will be displayed with these magical landscapes. Which by the way will be 5 foot images. This is a show not to be missed!

Brakes On the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, about the time the Gulf oil spill was about to capped, Drew Ludwig decided to take a walk. A long walk. In August 2010, he traveled by foot 120 miles from the Ninth Ward of New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico.

"I went to help. I went to work. I held lofty goals of an activist, and I wanted to use my hands."

And so he did, his hands and his unerring eye, recording images with his camera of people and places encountered along the way. Drew's motivation: break down the idea of "The Other," a complex concept lifted from the social sciences that defines the process by which individuals and groups create distance between themselves and those who do not seem to fit easily and comfortably into their cloistered worlds.
