Around Telluride

January 23, 2009

On January 23rd, our beloved non-profit, local radio station, KOTO, will be holding its annual guest DJ day in an effort to raise money to pay for their yearly costs of operation and broadcasting. The theme is astrological this year, and will feature three DJs of each element in consecutive two hour segments, playing music of their choosing and hopefully, music from musicians of each element also. I’ve been asked to write a piece on the Four Elements, FYI. So, brush up on your astrological knowledge and tune in on Friday to find out who’s who.

The Four Elements – fire, earth, air and water – are the aggregates in the cornerstone of astrology – mankind’s oldest science - and as such, connect our physical, three dimensional world and our experience on it to the cosmic, ethereal world, i.e. the ethers – which is the fifth element of our Universe. They are the essential components of the astrological description of man.

The goal for this season is $50,000 from a Telluride community campaign book-ended by Guest D.J. Day, this Friday, January 23, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and The John Cowan band, March 7, 7:30 p.m. at the historic Sheridan Opera House.

The theme of Guest DJ Day: the signs of the Zodiac. “It’s All in the Stars” runs all day, and features the following clusters of local superstars:

The following is a summary of KOTO’s history in Jim’s words, writing under the alias B.F. Deal, in volume 7 of the “Koto Nooz”:

“You had to be in Telluride in 1974 to understand why KOTO came into being. At that time, Telluride’s available airwave entertainment consisted of one 1950s-style TV station, one semi-pop AM radio station and zero FM signals. Many of the new faces in town had grown up on music of the free form FM stations of the ‘60s and were ready for the information - and we wanted to live in a community that provided it all.

Some faces of KOTO

Beyond Telluride's KOTO, the FM and AM radio dials are crowded with commercial stations, offering not very much worthwhile around the clock, an incessant roar of rock, C & W, lots of “oldies,” inane talk and harsh rap.

Of the or so thousand public radio stations in the nation, only about a handful are like KOTO with no commercials or commercial underwriting whatsoever.

For 34 years, KOTO has been broadcasting 20 hours a day, 365 days a year from a 3,000-watt transmitter located about 200 yards west of the Coonskin lift. Over 2,500 community supporters comprise the membership. There are more than 200 licensed volunteer DJs, half of who are active on-air. A seven-member board, elected annually for two-year terms at KOTO’s July meeting, provides guidance and oversight.

The Nugget Theatre first opened in 1935 when the Nunn Building was divided to accommodate movie screenings. The Telluride Film Festival master leased the theatre in 1982 in order to have a venue with a "Main Street" address. The theatre has operated continuously ever since.

Luci Reeve, assisted by Jim Bedford, aka B.F. Deal, have sub-leased and managed the theatre since 1984 with Luci running the day-to-day operations and Jim programming the movies.
