What a year we had at Second Chance Humane Society!
With your help and support, we cared for so many animals! Hundreds in our Cat Castle and in Smitty’s Dog Den. Hundreds more were treated in our Clinic where we provide affordable rates to the general public. We affected the lives of animals for generations to come by providing hundreds of spay/neuter surgeries to community cats and animals on First Nations reservations. We spoke to school kids, to city councils, to newspapers and to people visiting our thrift stores in Telluride and Ridgway.
Our staff would be quick to point out that we also take great pride in helping people, not just animals.
Our Community Veterinary Voucher program provided dozens of animal owners this year with the opportunity to get their animal treated at veterinary clinics all over Western Colorado immediately at a time when they otherwise would not be able to afford it. Our thrift stores recognize that their role in their respective communities is to help our human community members. We are also able to provide bicycles, clothing, and blankets to underserved communities for free when we can. Our Pet Food Pantry routinely helps hundreds of families a year with feed and pet supplies for free. And, we participate in food pantry programs in Montrose every month!
While I can talk about the hundreds of animals and people we have served this past year, I also want to recognize the reasons why this is possible.
Our many donors and supporters generously gave us the resources to continue our critical work. Our thrift store shoppers, so many of them repeat customers, provided income that ended up helping animals. Our volunteers and foster care homes allowed us to expand our work with both people and animals. Our volunteer Board of Directors provide us with professional guidance, governance and strategy. Finally, our staff is just the best. Whether on the Ranch with our Shelter and Clinic, or at one of our thrift stores, our staff recognize how important our work is and they are rightly proud in working for an organization that takes its work so seriously.
It is not too soon to talk about what we will be doing in 2026.
We will expand our work to include other communities, bring our shelter and medical programs where animals most need our help, and engage in underserved areas that would otherwise not receive the kind of care and compassion our staff and volunteers can provide.
For my part, I am clearly very proud of this staff, our volunteers, our Board, and our supporters. Together, they are making amazing strides for the communities we serve. In a time when much else is uncertain, Second Chance Humane Society will continue to be the constant in providing care and compassion for the people and animals we serve.
Happy New Year from all of us at Second Chance Humane Society,
Nicholas Gilman
Executive Director
