Mountain Village was selected for its Farm-to-Community Program, a unique initiative that connects regional farmers with local residents to increase access to fresh, healthy food while strengthening the local food economy. The program provides weekly shares of locally grown produce to qualified residents during the summer months, helping support both community well-being and agricultural resilience.
The recognition comes as part of the Green Destinations “Top 100 Stories” competition, which honors destinations worldwide for their innovative and replicable sustainable practices. To qualify, the Town had to meet core criteria in the Global Sustainable Tourism Council Recognized Green Destinations Standard, Version 2, and its story was evaluated for sustainability, innovation, effectiveness and transferability to other destinations. Mountain Village’s story now joins an international platform of communities working to make tourism and local economies more environmentally and socially responsible.
“It was humbling and inspiring to be counted among this select group of communities from across the globe who are at the forefront of more responsible tourism,” said Mountain Village Mayor Marti Prohaska. “Mountain Village’s recognition as a leader on this international stage is a testament to our staff’s dedication to innovation and our community’s commitment to sustainability.”
“I developed the Farm-to-Community Program in 2018 as part of the implementation of a portion of my 2014 Climate Action Plan capstone project,” said Assistant Town Manager Michelle (Haynes) Bulson. “It was rewarding to be able to execute the program with the support of the Green Team and Mountain Village Town Council and staff. Since then, the program has transformed our community’s access and connection to local food. We are also able to provide stability for local farms that may otherwise be more subject to economic and climate variables that could impact their food production. We are proud to support local and regional agriculture and bring affordable, healthy produce to qualifying households.”
The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list is widely regarded as a benchmark for sustainable destinations worldwide. Mountain Village’s inclusion highlights the town’s ongoing efforts in environmental stewardship, climate action and community well-being.
ABOUT MOUNTAIN VILLAGE:
Situated in the heart of the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, Mountain Village was incorporated in 1995 as a home rule municipality. Its founders envisioned a European-style ski-in/ski-out, pedestrian-friendly destination resort that would complement the historic mining town of Telluride.
A three-stage gondola transportation system connects the Town of Mountain Village with the Town of Telluride. Situated at 9,500 feet, Mountain Village is comparably a world apart from other resorts: it is innately spectacular, beautifully orchestrated and planned, and overflowing with style, charm, and sophistication.
