Dr. Alan suggest we start with what you should know about current vaccine recommendations. For RSV, the CDC now recommends vaccination for all adults 75 and older, plus those 60-74 at higher risk. One dose provides at least two years of protection. For shingles, adults 50 and up should get two doses of Shingrix, which is remarkably effective – 97% protection in people 50-69 and 91% in those 70 and older.

But here’s where it gets interesting: these vaccines, along with your annual flu shot, may be doing much more than preventing their target diseases. Take the flu vaccine for example. Multiple meta-analyses show that annual flu vaccination reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events by up to 34% over the following year. Research demonstrates a 26% lower risk of heart attacks and 33% reduction in cardiovascular deaths in people who received their yearly flu shot.

Studies show that RSV and shingles vaccines may help prevent dementia, and the flu vaccine appears to offer significant heart protection. It turns out our immune system connections run deeper than we realized.

So listen in as Dr. Alan explores these fascinating side benefits of routine vaccinations. You might be surprised at just how much protection you’re getting from one simple shot.
