Hello and Happy July!

The unveiling of our latest annual exhibit, “A Rare Medium, Well Done: 50 Years of KOTO” was a great success!

With 140 guests in attendance, we were able to celebrate the history of KOTO with the station’s staff, alumni, and many locals.

Attendees were all ears as they explored past radio recordings, spoke with DJs, and celebrated the last 50 years of KOTO.

The exhibit, which will be on display until April 2026, showcases the familiar faces of KOTO, soundbites of your favorite radio moments, and a replica KOTO sound booth where you can see what it feels like “on air.”

Need to get out and about? Join us on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 1pm for a historic walking tour. The hour and fifteen minute tours, led by world-class raconteur Ashley Boling. Cost $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Walks will continue through mid-October.

Our sluicing experience is also now open! Have your kids try their hands at an authentic mining experience to pan for gems and fossils.

Our partnership with Telluride’s Wilkinson Public Library and their San Juan Stories Book Club program continues with “Tomboy Bride” by Harriet Fish Backus. Looking to brush up on some local history? Pick up a copy from the gift shop and see our cabin replica based on the book!

Join us for a discussion with Harriet’s grandson, Rob Walton, on July 14th, 5:15pm at the Library. Find more details on the Museum’s website.

As we get into July, get ready for “Hike into History”. July 19th, 10:00 am, we will be hiking from Dennis Weaver Park into the town of Ridgeway to learn more about the filming of the movie “True Grit” and see familiar sites where John Wayne took on his role as Rooster Cogburn.

This hike is a leisurely pace and handicap accessible. If you need transportation to the hike, please contact the museum for questions, limited rides are available.

And don’t forget our annual special “Evening with Ken Burns.” Event takes place August 24. Screening will be Burns’ documentary about country music (2019) + Q & A. Doors 5:30 p.m.; screening, 6 p.m. Tickets here.

See you soon!

Sincerely,

Your Museum Family
