Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, claiming nearly 700,000 lives each year. That’s roughly one in every five deaths. Yet, despite these alarming statistics, heart disease is often preventable with proactive steps and personalized care.

Understanding Your Risk

Many factors contribute to heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. Genetics and family history also play a role, making it crucial to understand your personal risk.

Prevention is Key

The good news is that many of these risk factors are within your control. Simple lifestyle changes can significantly improve your heart health, such as:

Eating a heart-healthy diet: Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while limiting processed foods and added sugars.
Staying active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, like brisk walking or cycling.
Managing stress: Practice mindfulness, meditation, or other stress-reducing activities to protect your heart and overall health.
Avoiding tobacco: If you smoke, quitting is the best gift you can give your heart.

Partnering with Your Primary Care Provider

Your primary care provider (PCP) is your greatest ally in preventing heart disease. They can assess your risk through regular check-ups, blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring, and screenings for conditions like diabetes. Your PCP can also guide you in developing a personalized prevention plan tailored to your needs and lifestyle.

Scheduling a visit with your primary care provider is a proactive step toward understanding your heart health and reducing your risk of future disease. Together, you can build a roadmap to a healthier, longer life.
