Influenza, or “the flu” is a respiratory virus that typically affects North America as early as October and lasts through May.
The flu can cause mild to severe respiratory illness. Severe cases of influenza can lead to hospitalization and death. The elderly, young, people who are immunocompromised, or have health conditions like asthma; COPD; cancer; and heart disease are at especially high risk for complications of Influenza.
THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT THE FLU IS BY GETTING VACCINATED EACH YEAR.
The Telluride Medical Center is now offering flu shots for everyone over 6 months of age.
COVID Boosters:
Now that the updated COVID booster has been approved, the TRMC is working hard to make it available to our patients as soon as possible.
We anticipate being able to schedule appointments for the new booster at TMC around October 16.
For earlier availability, San Miguel County Public Health expects to make the new COVID vaccine available near the end of September. Additionally, most large pharmacies (i.e. Walgreens, City Market, etc.) have the booster available.
Unlike prior rounds, COVID vaccines will no longer be free of charge, however most major insurance companies should cover the cost of the vaccine.
For uninsured patients, free vaccine access may be available. Reach out to San Miguel County Public Health to learn more about your eligibility.
