Telluride Mushroom Fest: Dr. Julie Daoust of Om Mushrooms/M2 Ingredients!

Telluride Mushroom Fest: Dr. Julie Daoust of Om Mushrooms/M2 Ingredients!

The Telluride Mushroom Festival is back for the 43rd year in a row. In just a few weeks, the Town of Telluride will be taken over by amanita hat-wearing, mold- and spore-worshipping mycelium fanatics.

(Sorry, the event is sold out. And there is no waiting list. But day passes are available.)

Festival guest Dr. Julie Daoust is Chief Science Officer/Head of Business Development at Om Mushroom and M2 Ingredients. Over Festival weekend Dr. Julie is scheduled to talk about her company’s latest mycology project which is all about the breeding and cultivation of functional mushrooms.

Scroll down to listen to Dr. Julie’s podcast (which also includes Om founder Steve Farrar, who is semi-retired, but happened to be in the office when Julie and I spoke.)

For over a decade, Om Mushroom Superfood has brought the benefits of mushrooms to consumers: first, as an ingredient in functional foods and other supplements; now as a leading innovator in the burgeoning space.

Om founders, Sandra Carter (M.A. MPH, Ph.D.), a health and wellness expert with a PhD in preventative medicine, and Steve Farrar, a mycologist with over 30 years experience growing mushrooms, have long had a deep-rooted passion for fungi. Today Om grows 11 species in its certified 100% organic, BRCGS AA-rated Carlsbad, California facility, where all its products are non-GMO, soy, gluten, and filler-free.

Om’s vision? To make a positive difference to everyday health through mushrooms.

At Om/M2, Julie Daoust is Chief Science Officer/Head of Business Development. She initially became interested in mycology through her studies in ethnobotany and herbalism.

Dr. Julie went on to obtain a PhD in natural product chemistry from the University of British Columbia where her interest in mushrooms and their functional benefits deepened. Dr. Julie then went on to translate that passion for fungi, also herbalism and nutrition, into a career in the nutraceutical industry where she has brought dozens of products to market.

With that extensive experience in product development, at Om Dr. Julie helms supplement and plant-based food brands. And, with her commitment to research, her expertise in natural product chemistry and clinical research is serving M2 ingredients in particular to expand and optimize its functional mushroom offerings.
