San Miguel County puts out the word: Flu and COVID vaccine clinics scheduled throughout the fall for all 6 months of age and older.

While seasonal influenza (flu) viruses are detected year-round in the United States, flu infections are most common during the fall and winter. October historically marks the beginning of flu season according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As such, San Miguel County Public Health will start administering flu vaccines at weekly clinics beginning September 22 and through the month of October.

“The annual flu vaccine aims to defend individuals against new strains of flu and is meant to protect individuals from the risk of complications due to infection,” said Public Health Director Grace Franklin. “As COVID transmissions are expected to increase during the winter, all measures we can take to lower the risk of infection will not only protect from transmission of either respiratory disease, but also reduce strain on our hospitals.”

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine every season. Additionally, according to the CDC, it is safe to get a flu shot at the same time as a COVID vaccine.

“As with all of our effective tools to prevent the disease, it’s important we continue to practice healthy hygiene as the weather cools and our activities and gatherings move indoors,” said Public Health Director Grace Franklin. “Anytime you are feeling sick or symptomatic, it’s important to stay home or wear a mask to protect others from infection. As flu, the common cold, strep and other seasonal illnesses increase in prevalence, it’s important to consult a physician and get tested to know how best to treat yourself and minimize the spread of viruses.”

Those interested in receiving a flu vaccine through Public Health should register through the Public Health website, though walk-ins are welcome. Those interested in receiving a flu vaccine from their doctor should reach out to their primary care provider for appointment availability.
