This week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) authorized the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for 5- to 11-year-olds. This official authorization comes after careful analysis and unanimous recommendations by the advisory committees of both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC for use of the Pfizer vaccine for these younger populations.
“Most children are now eligible to get the safe and highly effective Pfizer vaccine to prevent infection, hospitalization or death from COVID-19,” said Public Health Director Grace Franklin. “As we continue to prioritize in-person learning, this is an essential step to protecting children and their family members. Getting our children vaccinated is one of the most important things we can do before we travel and gather with family for the holidays.”
Cases in Colorado have been increasing steadily for weeks, notably amongst school-aged children. Experts have warned that indoor gatherings may send the rates soaring again, especially as the holiday season is expected to be the busiest travel season since the pandemic began.
The FDA, CDC, CDPHE and San Miguel County Public Health recommend parents and guardians make a plan to get their children vaccinated as soon as possible. Public Health received a shipment of 300 Pfizer doses intended for 5- to 11-year-olds earlier this week and plans to distribute these doses at a variety of clinics in the coming weeks:
Tuesday, November 9 – Carhenge Parking Lot – CDPHE Vaccine Bus with Pfizer, Moderna, J&J and flu vaccines – 10 am to 6 pm
Wednesday, November 10 – Carhenge Parking Lot – CDPHE Vaccine Bus with Pfizer, Moderna, J&J and flu vaccines – 9 am to 1 pm
Wednesday, November 10 – Norwood’s Pig Palace Parking Lot – CDPHE Vaccine Bus with Pfizer, Moderna, J&J and flu vaccines – 3 to 6 pm
Tuesday, November 16 – Telluride Intermediate School Gym – 5- to 11-year-olds prioritized – 12:45 to 5:45 pm
Thursday, November 18 – Norwood’s Lonecone Library – 5- to 11-year-olds prioritized – 3:45 to 4:30 pm
