For this week, Dr. Alan curated a story about an Israeli study offering promising news about a third booster shot, plus other salient information about the pandemic.
For more information, read on.
• Older adults who have received a third “booster” dose of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine are 11 times less likely to contract SARS-CoV-2 and almost 20 times less likely to get severely ill than those who only received two doses, a new Israeli study has found. Read more about booster doses here.
• The official COVID-19 mortality count in the United States has surpassed 660,000, but inaccuracies in cause of death reports hide the true impact of the pandemic. Researchers recently explored healthcare factors at the county level to help explain the disparity. Their study found that most of these excess deaths occurred in areas affected by racial and social injustices. Read more about the study here.
• France has suspended around 3,000 health workers without pay for not getting vaccinated against COVID-19. The government had set September 15 as a deadline for workers to receive the first dose of the vaccine and produce a negative SARS-CoV-2 test as a condition for working.
