San Miguel County has opened pre-registration for those interested in the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 12 and older (bit.ly/smcvaccine). Last month, Pfizer applied for an amendment to the Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Authorization to include young people 12+ and a decision is expected in the coming days.

The company began trials for that age group in the fall of 2020 enrolling 2,260 adolescents in the trial in the United States. According to the final report, no cases of COVID-19 were observed in the vaccinated group of 1,131 participants, while 18 cases were observed in the placebo group. These results demonstrate 100% efficacy and robust antibody responses in the trial participants.

“By expanding the age groups eligible to receive the vaccine, we can continue our momentum in protecting our most vulnerable populations,” said Public Health Director Grace Franklin.“With the distribution of Pfizer to the county for our previous clinic targeting 16- and 17-year-olds, we are excited to offer this opportunity to our 12- to 15-year-olds.”

Pfizer has also said it plans to submit requests for two amendments by September for two additional age groups, including children 2 to 5 years of age and those 5 to 11 years of age.

The requests will come after Pfizer completes subsequent phased studies on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine for these youth.

Public Health is hopeful for clinic opportunities toward the end of May as supply remains limited for Pfizer due to storage limitations.
