13 Jun Telluride Medical Center: Wellness Counseling Services Announced
This week, the Telluride Medical Center (TMC) announced new Wellness Counseling services for Primary Care patients dealing with obesity, high cholesterol, or diabetes.
Wellness Counseling initiatives, like the one now offered at TMC, are on the rise as national obesity and diabetes rates continue to grow. According to TMC’s Patient Care Coordinator, Paula Scheidegger, in just the past year, 26% of their primary care patients had an abnormal Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25.
TMC’s individualized wellness counseling sessions are designed specifically for participants who are referred by their TMC Primary Care provider. Sessions are conducted by TMC Wellness Counselor, Bridget Taddonio, to maintain patient privacy.
Once enlisted, Taddonio works with participants to identify areas of concern, offer education and establish goals. Taddonio, an Exercise Physiologist and certified Health Fitness Specialist, focuses on personalized care in the areas of nutrition and physical activity.
TMC Executive Director, Gordon Reichard, said Wellness Counseling encompasses the mind and body.
“As health care providers we should look outside traditional medicine to help patients make difficult lifestyle changes and meet goals for healthier lives,” adding “This exciting new program is a step in the right direction. I anticipate good results.”
To ensure a well-rounded wellness program, TMC incorporates a blend of physical and non-physical components that include one-on-one counseling sessions, group sessions, education curriculum and volunteer led physical activity groups.
Wellness Counseling services at TMC are made possible by a grant from the Tri-County Health Network and by additional funding from TMC. TMC will monitor the program’s progress for the duration of the two-year grant with the hope that the results will ensure Wellness Counseling will have an indefinite place at TMC.
Taddonio is optimistic about the program.
“I’m excited to connect with people who are ready to make changes in their lives, but just don’t know how or don’t have the support to do so. We can offer those missing links by working together.”
