FASHION FRIDAY: LITTLE WHITE DRESS

FASHION FRIDAY: LITTLE WHITE DRESS

A few weeks ago, the subject of Fashion Friday was white jeans. We were bold. We overruled old-fashioned etiquette mavens, even grandma, when we gave the green light to sporting white denims before Memorial Weekend. Now with Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, we have another suggestion – New Yorkers, plug your ears – move your go-to little black dress to the back of your closet and replace it with a little white dress which, unlike the jeans, is definitely a summer thing.

Where to wear your LWD? I can easily come up with a host of outings where it is just the ticket.

May and June mean graduations galore. Some grad girls are required to wear white; others just like the color as a symbol of a new life, new beginnings.

Speaking of a new life, springtime babies just might lead to summer christenings: a mother and child in matching white symbolizes beauty and innocence. That goes for god-mothers too!

Wedding season also picks up in June. While most brides tend to choose tradition gowns, it is possible for a bride with a more casual bent, like many in Telluride, to dress “off-the-rack” at boutiques like ours, Two Skirts, where she can find a beautiful Shoshanna number or Red Valentino. A beach bride would look stunning in a floor-length Joie silk sundress. And in the roll-up to her wedding, a bride-to-be can give her entourage a sneak peak at what she will look like when she floats down the aisle by wearing a stunning white frock at her bridal shower or rehearsal dinner.

But you don’t have to be a bride-to-be, a grad, a new mom, or a fairy godmother to add a “LWD” to your wardrobe right now. Your next dinner party, kid’s birthday, lunch with the girls , a garden party – white eyelet for the game of croquet – are all occasions for you and me to throw on a white dress.

Summer, particularly in Telluride, is such a short season, I suggest wearing a white dress as often as possible before the clock ticks into fall. An added incentive: white is very flattering. The color makes almost everyone look good and tanned.
