It was music to our ears to learn that Sean Johnson and his Wild Lotus Band will make an appearance at the 4th annual Telluride Yoga Festival. This summer, the event takes place Thursday – Sunday, July 14 – July 17.
Kirtan derives from the Sanskrit (the language of yoga) “kirtanam,” meaning praise or eulogy. The term refers to devotional group singing of mantras, sounds charged with psychospiritual powers. It is a well-documented fact that prolonged and concentrated chanting of these sounds, even without a clear understanding of the literal meaning of the words, leads to positive alterations in consciousness.
New Orleans mantra musicians Sean Johnson and The Wild Lotus Band (Alvin Young and Gwendolyn Colman) are widely celebrated as among the most exciting and musically dynamic kirtans artists in the West. Their innovative approach to chant music transcends genres: shades of rock, jazz, funk, and folk merge evocatively with the magic of ancient sacred utterances. The group is the first among kirtan artists to be invited to perform at The New Orleans Jazz Festival.
Vocalist and harmonium player Sean Johnson is the founder of the band. He has led kirtan across the U.S. and abroad for over a decade.
