The story begins with the Telluride Yoga Festival.
Telluride Inside… and Out interviewed senior Jivamukti instructor Karl Straub for the second annual Telluride Yoga Festival. This past summer, another Yoga Fest guest, the remarkable teacher, Mark Whitwell, introduced us to yoga instructor/entrepreneur Gail Mondry. Turns out, Mondry is connected to Telluride through her affiliation with the Grand Heritage chain, now running the new and vastly improved Peaks Resorts & Spa.
Recently, Mondry created a new business, Yoga Vacations, dedicated to yoga-based adventures in spectacular settings.
“The mission of Yoga Vacations is travel to a great destinations, where a person can enjoy a great yoga experience in the context of a great vacation. Instead of removing yourself from your daily life as the concepts of “immersion” or “retreat” imply, “vacation” suggests the freedom to explore in the afternoons or evenings following a practice to absorb the scenery and culture of a place. Or simply enjoy spa luxuries.”
Mondry, a self-described “yoga concierge,” plans a May workshop in Telluride to coincide with Mountainfilm in Telluride. (More on that later.) A much earlier Yoga Vacations adventure is scheduled for right after the New Year and features Straub.
Mondry’s upcoming Baja trip is planned for Thursday, January 6 – Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at the Costa Baja Resort and Spa in La Paz, (“City of Peace”), Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Straub’s yoga bona fides are impressive: his teachers are among the Who’s Who from a range of Eastern traditions. They include David Life, Sharon Gannon, Swami Bua, Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Tharchin, Geshe Michael Roach, Christie McNally, Jonas Westring, Richard Freeman, and Keido Fukushima. Straub lists Jivamukti Yoga, Thai Yoga Massage, Tibetan Heart Yoga, and the E-RYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher), a designation from Yoga Alliance, on his resume.
Straub’s “lay” credentials are equally impressive. The multi-interested and talented Duke University grad was once a competitive swimmer and dolphin communicator.
Hmm….yoga, massage, dolphin communicator and competitive swimmer? No accident Mondry tagged Straub to lead a yoga adventure from Yoga Vacations near the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez.
