Unknown This post is deeply personal: The award-winnning contemporary painter Riva Sweetrocket is Telluride Inside... and Out's dearly beloved Denver neighbor. She is also an artist in the stable of the Plus+ Gallery, the Mile High City's outpost (at 2501 Larimer) for uncommonly talented artists with something to say, though they usually don't say it in common vernacular. Riva is currently the featured artist at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

A retrospective of Riva Sweetrocket's bold and beguiling pastels, "Riva Sweetrocket: Extra Ordinary," is  on display at Gates Garden Court Gallery through January 23, 2011, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

SUMMIT THORANG PEAK Generally when a person reaches the top of whatever heap, he wants to hold on tight to his position. Not Telluride local/mountaineer Ben Clark. His objective was to get there and get down.

As many who followed Ben's adventure on his popular website skithehimalayas.com (or Telluride Inside... and Out) already know, he set out on October 14 on his ninth trip to Nepal with one objective in mind: summit Thorung Peak, a 20,200 foot peak in Himalayas. (In Spring 2010 Ben sprained an ankle attempting  Baruntse.) Mission accomplished in early November.

(Editor's note: The Telluride region's The New Community Coalition sends this information about the greenhouses that were built by Telluride High School students.) Exciting news from the Telluride High School backyard: The school board gave the nod to students and SWIRL - the Southwest...

Awareness into Action: Galamsey     Telluride locals David Byars and Jenny Jacobi left last year's Mountainfilm with the same inspiration and desire to do good that many take away from Telluride's film and philanthropy festival. Not wanting to lose this feeling, they began a serious...

Scorpio/Taurus Full Moon: Gifts of Gratitude and Grace

Magic sunset2 I don’t know how many of you get up early enough to see the magnificently brilliant planet Venus rising in the predawn darkness as a morning star. But what a blessing for those who do! And for those of you who haven’t witnessed this stunning celestial sight, it’s something you should really, really, really try to see. This week Venus - the Earth’s closest planet next to its satellite, the Moon - is riveting in its beauty, exceptionally bright in magnitude and so big, it looks like a UFO. And there’s also something magical about rising before dawn, watching the eastern sky grow slowly turquoise, pink and crimson. The quiet peace and tranquility, the twinkling stars, the phenomenal cosmic world - before the hustle and bustle of cars and trucks – it embraces the spirit and centers the soul. Great way to start the day - in synch with the Universe.

And once the day begins, the people move, coffee brews and we get ready for our daily tasks, routines and responsibilities. And it’s good. It’s Thanksgiving week and the Moon grows full - we are bringing another lunar cycle to a close. Reaching fruition on Nov. 21st @ 10:27 am MST at 29º18’ Scorpio/Taurus, this is the second of five Full Moons in a row that form at the last degree of a sign. And just as each of the 12 signs of the zodiac represent a universal cycle of development, so do the 30 degrees of each sign. Early degrees are similar to the zodiac’s first signs and symbolize birth, initiation and new phases of development. Later degrees resonate with the energies of completion, evolution and resolution.

Image001 Eat. Pray. And Telluride's Two Skirts has lots of Love in store in the forms of bracelets and earrings designed by Me & Ro, the inspirational line of symbolic pieces featured in the movie (made from The Book).

In 1991, director/founder Robin Renzi opened her New York City-based jewelry house on the belief in the power of jewelry to express the human values of strength, love, and faith. Using ancient characters from Tibetan, Chinese, Sanskrit and Tamil languages, much of the line is engraved in a simple, straightforward manner with words/phrases fraught with meaning, turning each piece into a modern-day talisman. Throughout the years, Me & Ro developed a strong celebrity following, including actress Julia Roberts.

Unknown The Telluride AIDS Benefit has focused on prevention education and outreach since its inception in 1993. The next chapter in TAB's playbook occurs Friday, November 19, when TAB hosts Hope's Voice, a special program, exclusive to the student body of the Telluride Middle School/High School.

The talk, "Does HIV Look Like Me," features Hope's Voice spokespeople Todd Murray and Christina Rock, two young adults living with HIV/AIDS. Specifically the duo plan to discuss the realities of living, not dying, with an uninvited and persistent "companion."

Thegirlwiththedragontattoo_smallposter Countdowntozero_smallposter For the week of Friday, November 19 through Thursday, November 25 (Thanksgiving), Telluride's Nugget Theatre is "all Salander, all the time." The week starts out with a Sheep Mountain Alliance sponsored film about nuclear danger in the post-Cold War period, "Countdown to Zero." The rest of the week is devoted to Swedish writer Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy and his counter-culture heroine, Lisbeth Salander. Should be an interesting week.

For showtimes, see below and for reviews and trailers, see the Nugget website.

(w)holeposter Telluride Inside... and Out was on the road again, this time in Denver for a weekend away to celebrate the most recent triumphs of two talented friends: Ivar Zeile of the Plus Gallery and Tracy Shaffer, actress, playwright, founder of the Thriving Artist Alliance (and TIO's popular Denver writer.) Art by two. Art squared.

Located at 2501 Larimer, Plus is Denver's edgiest art emporium and Ivar, a rainmaker among the avant garde. The night we arrived Ivar had teamed up with Win Wear to host an evening of experimental shorts dedicated to the poetic exploration of landscape. (We bagged: Too tired after the winter drive. But later heard the fun lasted into the wee hours of the morning.)

The next evening, en route to Tracy's play, "(W)hole," we stopped for dinner at the Zeiles' – pizza and wings ordered in from Marco's, the best in town –  and to see the latest exhibition at Plus, "Primitives," featuring the work of California sculptor Mike Whiting.
