The Telluride local known on the streets simply as “MD” is not what his handle suggests. Michael Patrick Doherty is an artist, this month the featured virtuoso at the Ah Haa School for the Arts. “Life on Telluride” officially opens tomorrow, February 4, for the First Thursday Art Walk., 5 – 8 p.m. in Ah Haa’s Daniel Tucker Gallery.
MD’s signature is a strong black outline separating vibrant blocks of color that play off one another in compositions with just enough detail to suggest a story. The images may grab you at first, especially if you are familiar with a place or face, but it’s the flat-out chromatic intensity and whimsical patterns that hold you in place. TIO’s reflexive reaction to one of MD’s works is to make like Mr. Smiley Face.
MD claims his career as an artist began in the womb. His sold his first painting to his kindergarten teacher for a quarter. To learn what happened next, how MD got from there to here, click the “play” button and listen to his podcast.
