Charlotte & Devin If she has said it once, Telluride AIDS Benefit board member/teacher Sandy McLaughlin has said it a dozen times: the action on the catwalk is not the primary reason the Benefit produces a Student Fashion Show. Read between the lines– clothing and otherwise.

For the Telluride AIDS Benefit, the big idea behind the clothes, the choreography, and the music is that  the pandemic persists largely unabated. The tenacity of the virus drives the need for  prevention education to keep everyone safe and raising money to support the Telluride AIDS Benefit's beneficiaries – The Western Colorado AIDS Project, Children's Hospital Immunodeficiency Project, Brother Jeff's Health Initiative, Manzini Youth Care Project, and the Ethiopian Family Fund – who in turn support those living with HIV/AIDS and their families.

The co-directors of the 2011 Student Fashion Show, February 24, 6 p.m., The Palm, are Charlotte Delpit and Devin McCarthy, two of Telluride's best and brightest teens. Both are also in TAB's (sold out) adult fashion show, Thursday, March 3, and Saturday, March 5.

Copy_of_winter From the get-go, founder/director Aubrey Hackman aimed high, starting with the instructors she has invited to her Telluride Yoga Festival. Though every one had a national, even international reputation, the roster did not include celebrity yogis, brands unto themselves, with book deals, fashion lines, and studio franchises. They were individuals like herself who walked their talk: scholars, not pretzels, deep students and scholars of a transformative tradition with roots dating back nearly 5,000 years.
One of them was David Hollander.

Now David, who returns to the 4th annual Telluride Yoga Festival this summer ( July 14– July 1),  joins Aubrey to help launch the first Telluride Yoga Festival in Winter. The event takes place Thursday, March 10 – Sunday, March 13 at The Peaks Resort and includes six yoga classes, morning meditation and evening kirtan, plus full access to The Peaks Spa and Fitness Center, a 21,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility.

As philanthropic giving has decreased in the latest economic downturn, it has become necessary for nonprofit organizations to better demonstrate the impact of their work in order to be competitive for a smaller pool of funding.  As such, the national news is full of examples of program evaluation, assessment and accountability.  Whether it is teacher accountability through student testing, the requirement that American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus money) grant funded projects must track job creation, or the Disaster Accountability Project, which evaluates disaster relief and aid organizations’ response to natural disasters, there is a national trend toward measuring outcomes to determine the effectiveness of programs to bring about positive social change.

Lurgio_RedShedFlyShop Tony rizzuto Friday – Sunday, March 11 – March 13, Jeremy Lurgio and Tony Rizzuto are scheduled to lead a photography intensive at Telluride's Ah Haa School for the Arts. The subject matter: "The Photography of People."

Portrait photography like portrait painting raises any number of provocative questions. To what extend does or should a portrait function like a literary biography? What distinguishes a fine art photography portrait from the digitals you snap of your family to email to relatives? Does the answer have something to do with the extent to which the person doing the shooting manages to reveal his sitter's inner landscape. Irving Penn's spare, frank compositions shot in the natural light of his studio with rudimentary props helped define define the look of Vogue magazine in the 1940s. Penn's images, like those of Avedon later, produced intense engagement with his subject that made viewers feel like voyeurs.

Prince-beta-062-300x233 Esperanza Spalding's first Telluride appearance was 2007 for Winter Jazz. Those of us who know Telluride Jazz Celebration's impresario Paul Machado know the man has an eye for the ladies. His special gift is to catch rising stars before they have reached their zenith: violinist Regina Carter, guitarist Badi Assad, chanteuses Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, and Lizz Wright to name a few of Machado’s picks early in their careers.

The story of Esperanza Spalding is a rags-to-riches-tale, an American dream come true, because a smart single mom recognized she had  a gifted daughter who thought – and played – out of the box. Years later, the jazz bassist/singer has clearly earned the respect of her peers. And one of her major fans happens to be President Obama. Last night, Sunday, February 13, Esperanza took the Grammys by storm, winning Best Artist, trumping popsters Justin Bieber and Drake, plus bands Mumford & Sons (Telluride Bluegrass Festival, 2010) and Florence & The Machine.
