17 Sep Town of Telluride: All Fire Restrictions Lifted!
Following improved fire conditions across the region and in alignment with San Miguel County, the Town of Telluride will lift all fire restrictions effective at 12:01 a.m. MT on Friday, September 18, 2026. Fire restrictions have been in place within Town limits since June 18, 2026.

The Town Manager is authorized to implement, modify, and rescind fire restrictions under Chapter 7, Article 9 of the Telluride Municipal Code, adopted by Town Council on June 9, 2026, which enables the Town to respond swiftly to changing fire conditions without requiring a full ordinance process.
Lifting fire restrictions does not change the permanent provisions of the Telluride Municipal Code or state law. Fireworks remain prohibited within Town limits year-round, and Town code requirements governing open burning, grills, and construction sites remain in effect. Residents and visitors planning to burn outside Town limits should confirm current requirements with San Miguel County, the U.S. Forest Service, or the Bureau of Land Management, as restrictions on those lands are set separately.
Even with restrictions lifted, the Town asks everyone to use caution with anything that could start a fire:
Never leave a fire, grill, or fire pit unattended.
Drown fires with water, stir the ashes, and drown again until they are cold to the touch.
Keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby when using a grill or fire pit.
Fully extinguish cigarette butts and dispose of them in appropriate receptacles only.
Report smoke or fire by calling 911.
“We have seen conditions improve to the point where these restrictions are no longer necessary, and we want to thank the community for its patience over a long and dry summer,” said Town Manager Zoe Dohnal. “Residents, visitors, and businesses took these restrictions seriously, and that cooperation made a real difference. Fall conditions can still change quickly, so we ask everyone to keep using good judgment with fire.
