Hello from the Telluride Historical Museum!
Summer is in full swing and so are this year’s historic celebrations. Stop by the museum after the 4th of July parade and grab a root beer float! Floats are $5 while supplies last, and afterwards enjoy free admission to the museum! Stop in this summer to see our newest exhibit, “Moments that Made US: San Miguel Stories.” The exhibit explores how generations of Americans in San Miguel County and beyond have given meaning to the ideals set out in the Declaration of Independence.
If you find yourself at the museum on Tuesdays or Thursdays, take a walking tour with local historian Ashley Boling. The cost is $15 for non-members and $10 for members.
We have some amazing events for the month of July. Join us at the Conference Center Plaza in Mountain Village to enjoy our free outdoor historical film series. We will be screening “1776” on July 7th; “National Treasure,” on July 14th; and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” on July 21st. Grab a blanket, a chair and a friend to enjoy the flicks! For those looking for a film on local history, join us at the Sheridan Opera House on July 25th to see “The Nugget: A Telluride Restoration Story.” Enjoy the screening with complimentary appetizers, beer, wine and a Q&A to follow the screening. Tickets are available here, be sure to get them before they are gone!
Our hikes into history are back as well! Join us on July 23rd, for an excellent hike led by Ted Wilson, president of the San Miguel County Historical Commission, into Keystone Gorge to explore the history and remnants of the Keystone Placer Mine and its important place in Telluride History!
Looking for a new summer read? Join the museum and the Wilkinson Public Library for our book club! This month, we are reading “We The People: A History of the U.S. Constitution,” by Jill Lepore. On July 29th we will be joined by Melanie Morgan, attorney and San Miguel County Judge to lead the book discussion.
Don’t forget to see what we are up to online! Each month we release a new episode of our micro-podcast called Historic Harmonies. You can find the episodes on Spotify, here, or catch them after KOTO’s Wednesday evening news segment on the third Wednesday of the month. Want to learn more about our local history and landscapes? Check out our Power of Place videos on Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok. These videos include historic photos, and information about some of the most interesting places in San Miguel County.
Stay tuned for more summer programming, such as our Evening With Ken Burns, happening August 30th. Ticket sales will be announced soon! We hope you join us for all the summer fun coming up!
