The program, titled “American Music for Brass, with a little help from our friends (Canada, England, and France),” spans centuries and continents — from Renaissance miniatures and Debussy’s shimmering impressionism to beloved operatic highlights from Bizet’s “Carmen” and Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.”

It is sure to be a wide-ranging and joyful evening that will delight seasoned concertgoers and first-time visitors alike.

The quintet brings together five of New York’s finest.

Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin, praised as “brilliant, impeccable” by The New York Times, has performed as soloist in John Williams’s score to Spielberg’s Lincoln and is a faculty member at The Juilliard School.

Second Trumpet Raymond Riccomini has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic and appeared on the soundtrack of Spielberg’s recent “West Side Story.”

French Horn Richard Deane participated in over 80 recordings and 20 Grammy-winning albums during his tenure with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Trombonist Colin Williams released his acclaimed solo debut album, Ash, in 2018, a deeply personal work exploring injury, recovery, and identity.

Principal Tuba Alan Baer has toured as soloist and chamber musician across four continents, including Japan, Switzerland, Germany, and Brazil.

The New York Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet made its debut in 1983 alongside The Canadian Brass and has since performed at Tanglewood, Wolf Trap, and Mostly Mozart, building an international reputation over four decades. Their return to Telluride is one of the most anticipated chamber music events of the summer season.

The quintet also brings their talents to the wider community with The Brass Family, a free interactive kids’ concert at the Gondola Plaza on Oak Street on Friday July 31st at 11am, in collaboration with Wilkinson Public Library.

Find them at the bottom of the Farmer’s Market for a fun and engaging introduction to brass instruments — a rare opportunity for young audiences in the community to experience musicians of this caliber up close. Free admission, all ages welcome, with the library as a rain venue.
