For years, the Delta Animal Shelter’s role has been limited to taking in stray dogs, caring for them, and reuniting them with their families. In the unfortunate event that no one stepped forward to claim these pets, they were transferred to the custody of partnering organizations for adoption.

While these services are essential, local residents have been asking the same question for years: “Why can’t we adopt dogs from our own local shelter?”

Community members looking to adopt often had to travel an hour or more to neighboring communities to find their next furry family member. Today, we are thrilled to announce that this has finally changed. With Second Chance Humane Society operating the Delta shelter, we are launching Delta’s first-ever dog adoption program.

For the first time, local families can adopt dogs directly from their community shelter without having to drive to Montrose, Grand Junction, Ridgway, or beyond. This means more dogs will have the opportunity to find loving homes, and it means the Delta shelter can play an even greater role in building a compassionate, animal-loving community.

Second Chance is only able to introduce these programs because of the generosity and thoughtfulness of Roice-Hurst Humane Society, the previous contractor for the Delta Shelter. They have been wonderful in helping us take over the contract, and have offered to help with some mobile veterinary events, taking in animals when we are in an over-flow situation and otherwise being terrific partners in helping us handle the dogs of the City of Delta

In addition to offering dogs for adoption, the shelter will accept owner surrenders on a case-by-case, space-available basis, helping even more dogs find their perfect forever homes. Surrender applications are available on the Second Chance Humane Society website (above).

Please note that kennel space at the Delta shelter is limited, and a portion of that space must remain available for stray dogs brought in by the City. As a result, owner surrenders are typically subject to a waiting list.

This milestone is the direct result of years of community support, enthusiasm, and advocacy. You asked for local adoption opportunities, and we heard you. We are grateful for the kindness, passion, and encouragement that so many residents have shown throughout this process.

And we’re just getting started.

As we continue building programs and services for the animals of Delta, we invite you to be part of this exciting new chapter. Visit the shelter, meet our adoptable dogs, share the news with friends and family, and follow us on social media to stay up to date on upcoming adoption opportunities, volunteer programs, foster initiatives, and other exciting developments.

Together, we’re creating more second chances for the dogs of Delta and helping them find the loving homes they deserve.

Maggie

Maggie will be the first dog available for adoption at the Delta shelter! A 3.5-year-old Pug mix, this girl is sweet as can be. Playful, loving, and so much fun, Maggie will make a wonderful companion for anyone and is the perfect start for our new program.
