Launched in 1979, Mountainfilm is one of America’s longest-running film festivals — a thought-provoking Memorial Day weekend event featuring film, art, and ideas. In addition to screening leading independent documentary films from around the world, the festival includes a speaker series, art and photography exhibits, early morning coffee talks, outdoor programs, and student programs. Mountainfilm. is also an Academy Award-qualifying festival in the Documentary Short Film category.

Truth be told, the number of trips, expeditions, projects and filmmakers birthed under the Mountainfilm banner is incalculable, all of them laser-focused on protecting and preserving endangered people, places and ideas.

Enter Festival Director Crystal Merrill.

Crystal has nearly two decades of experience in festival production, having worked with festivals in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Telluride. In fact, since 2013, Crystal has held various roles in operations, production, and programming, including Operations Director, Tour Director, and now Festival Director. Her accomplishments include revolutionizing operational systems, the record expansion of the Mountainfilm on Tour program, and the reimagining of the Mountainfilm for Students Program.

Crystal was selected as Director following an extensive national search process that drew over 50 applicants. She took over full-time from Suzan Beraza after the 2024 event

“I am incredibly honored for the opportunity to continue to collaborate and conspire with the team at Mountainfilm, building upon Suzan Beraza and exceptional vision. Even after 13 years of working with Mountainfilm, I still get goosebumps every time I see our banner strung up across main street.”

Crystal’s vision is to continue to enhance industry and audience engagement, while exploring innovative ways to diversify festival offerings and attract new audiences.

I wonder what inspired Crystal Merrill’s vision for this year’s Mountainfilm. The connection between nature and storytelling always interests me.
