Since 1994, the Animal Resource Center and the Shops of Second Chance Humane Society have been dedicated toserving animals in Southwestern Colorado. Second Chance Humane Society is almost always at capacity. With no empty kennels, our cat castle’s communal rooms full, a waiting list of families hoping to surrender their pets, and kitten season just around the corner, we urgently need to move more animals from the shelter into homes.
Adoption is always the best option.
Our goal is to match every animal with a loving, long-term family, and each successful adoption opens space for another pet in need. Our staff works closely with potential adopters to ensure the right match—because finding your companion isn’t just about who looks the cutest. Every animal has unique needs, energy levels, and personality traits. Sometimes the pet you came to meet isn’t the one who fits your lifestyle best, and that’s okay. We’re here to help guide you to the right fit for both you and the animal.
When adoption isn’t possible — which we completely understand — fostering is another incredibly impactful way to help.
Foster commitments can look different for everyone. Some families open their homes until a pet is adopted, while others offer short-term stays, such as weekend sleepovers or monthly stays, for long-term shelter dogs who need a break. Some fosters take in nursing mothers and their litters, caring for them until the kittens are old enough for adoption. Every type of foster placement makes a meaningful difference.
Foster homes are especially critical for animals who struggle in the shelter environment.
They give us valuable insight into how a pet behaves in a home while providing the animal with a calm, safe space to decompress. Many of the pets we see have never experienced life inside a home. Watching a dog settle into a bed for the first time, finally able to relax, is something our staff and fosters never forget.
Second Chance provides all food, supplies, medications, and training for foster families. With kitten season approaching, we are especially in need of dedicated fosters willing to care for orphaned kittens in the coming months. If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the time.
If fostering isn’t an option for you, there are still ways to help. Donations make a huge impact, especially this time of year. We’ve created wishlists on our website specifically for kitten supplies as we prepare for summer. Your support helps ensure we’re ready for every tiny life that comes through our doors.

Olio is a young, active, medium-sized dog, who urgently needs to get out of the shelter and into a home. Olio would do best as the only animal in the home, or with an experienced dog owner who is committed to supervising him around other animals! Olio loves people, is so smart, and makes an amazing adventure buddy. He has a big personality and can’t wait to share his life with someone.
