This year, 2026, marks the 15-year anniversary of Burlesque in Telluride. What began as a class for 11 women, has expanded into Telluride Theatre’s largest annual fundraiser. Throughout the winter, an all-star crew of local artists and performers create and rehearse original Burlesque pieces, culminating in home-grown performances that are fun, funky, weird, and wholly “Telluride.”
The week of events resurrects the raucous and raunchy variety shows of Telluride’s vaudeville era, featuring dancing, comedy and beautiful local women.
Telluride Theatre’s “Beginning Burlesque” class teaches newcomers the art of Burlesque throughout the winter, starting the first week of January. Over 8 weeks of classes, participants learn to shimmy, shake, strut, strip and tease. They will “graduate” in the CHEAP THRILLS performances Friday March 20 & Saturday March 21.
Sasha Cucciniello & Melissa Sumpter have taught the class together since its inception.
CHEAP THRILLS showcases the unique work of every student from Beginning Burlesque. Students go through the process of creating a character, choosing their music, devising their performance and choreography, and even making their own pasties.
Graduates of the Beginning Burlesque have the opportunity to audition for The House of Shimmy Shake (or HOSS), which is Telluride’s professional Burlesque Troupe. HOSS performers have gone on to perform at international Burlesque festivals, such as the Montreal Burlesque Festival, Colorado Burlesque Festival, and BurlyCon in Seattle.
On Thursday March 26, Friday March 27 & Saturday March 28, The House of Shimmy Shake will present an original performance honoring the last 15 years of Burlesque in Telluride. The performance, BURLESQUE REMIX, celebrates shows and characters from the last 15 years of Burlesque in Telluride, “Remix-ing” iconic songs and themes from years’ past.
BURLESQUE REMIX is directed by Sasha Cuciniello, co-directed/choreographed by Kelsey Trottier, and features over 30 local performers.
