The evening will start with a traditional Beethoven quartet and journey through genres, finishing with a quartet by jazz composer Wynton Marsalis. This concert promises to be uplifting and inspirational – the perfect solace from current stresses of day-to-day life.
Featuring Ilmar Gavilán and Melissa White (violins), Jaime Amador (viola), and Felix Umansky (cello), The Harlem Quartet has earned acclaim for its dynamic performances and fresh approach to classical music. The New York Times praised their “panache,” while the Cincinnati Enquirer lauded their “new attitude to classical music.” Grammy-winning woodwind virtuoso Ted Nash of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has been quoted saying, “Harlem Quartet is one of the greatest string quartets I have ever heard. They can play anything.”
The quartet has performed in 47 states and four continents, has been featured on numerous national television spots such as the Today Show and News Hour, and have even performed for first lady Michelle Obama at the White House. In collaboration with renowned artists such as pianist Awadagin Pratt and jazz legends Stanley Clarke and John Patitucci, they continue to push musical boundaries. Their collaboration on “Hot House” with Gary Burton and Chick Corea, earned them a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition and their ongoing partnership with Imani Winds resulted in their second Grammy Award for the recording “Passion for Bach & Coltrane”.
Championing diversity in classical music is at the core of the Harlem Quartet, as is a passion for music education.
While in Telluride the quartet will also perform an education workshop for the students of Telluride at the Palm Theatre, in collaboration with Palm Arts. This is all part of Telluride Chamber Music’s mission to bring music education and classical music to a wider audience through unique, approachable and innovative programming.
