“Christmas will always be as long as we stand heart to heart and hand in hand.” (Dr. Seuss).
The holiday is also proof that glitter is forever – take for example the sparkling words of TIO regular contributor David Feela: food, rather seeds for thought when, for the most part, joy to the world today is in the fine print and peace on earth remains aspirational.

Christmas Birds
It’s not that a bird eats so little
but so many eat so much seed
I refill the feeder every day.
And it’s not such a great variety
I need to reach for my guide book
each time a new bird appears.
They are the same Sparrows
and Wrens, a Finch, a Junco
or two but no more,
and certainly no less.
Together they set the feeder
swinging, spilling so much seed
to the ground sunflowers
might sprout by spring,
fluttering their bright petals
like butterfly wings.
But each Christmas I am grateful
that by simply being here
these birds lift the full weight
of winter one seed at a time.
David Feela’s latest book is “Feelasophy: Selected Essays.”
The work is a collection of about 70 essays Feela penned over the past decade for local and regional publications throughout the Mountain West and beyond.
Rather than dense academic philosophy, signature Feela offers up personal, observant, witty reflections on life’s absurdities and delights.
