Breathless…half dance, half dare.” NEW YORK TIMES

“Mike Block is my definition of the ideal musician for the 21st Century. Not only is he an enormously talented cellist and a great musician, but he writes music, he improvises, and he’s fearless.” (YO-YO MA)

Pushing the boundaries of traditional chamber music with a unique fusion of classical, jazz, hip-hop, and world music influences, this concert is part of Telluride Chamber Music’s “Not Your Average Classical!” series.

The series started last year with the sold out and hugely popular “PROJECT Trio” show. Featuring door prizes and a ticket price of just $20 for the event, Telluride Chamber Music and The Alibi created this series to have wide appeal and be a celebration for locals during off season.

“I can’t believe I’m jamming out to classical music and loving it!” said a new attendee of last year’s event. “It’s an event you didn’t know but you needed but will never regret coming to! (And with grooves you can’t shake!).”

Borrowing its name from a Brazilian wild sugar-apple, Biribá Union features Grammy Award-winning Mike Block (cello, vocals); Grammy-nominated Christylez Bacon (beatbox, guitar, rhymes); and Columbian pop star Patricia Ligia (electric bass, vocals).

Their music draws on the freestyle theatrics of hip-hop and Go-go sounds; the effortless beauty of Brazilian forró and choro; the earthiness of American roots music; and the improvisational spontaneity of jazz.

Biribá Union’s mission is to embody cultural acceptance and unification through music — but always with an infectious groove that hooks audiences in.

In addition to the evening concert, the students of Telluride School District will also be enjoying a treat by Biribá Union.

The trio will perform an education workshop at the Palm Theatre, 12:45pm on November 5, in collaboration with Palm Arts. That is all part of Telluride Chamber Music’s commitment to music education and bringing classical music to a wider audience through unique programming.
