The Town of Telluride will implement outdoor water restrictions as of yesterday Monday, August 25, in response to ongoing drought conditions and limited water availability.
Public Works is currently completing scheduled maintenance at the Pandora Water Treatment Plant, leaving Mill Creek as the primary treatment facility and Stillwell available as a backup. At the same time, all three raw water sources are showing signs of drought, with lower-than-normal flows observed this summer.
“These restrictions are a necessary step to conserve our limited water supply and ensure we can meet the community’s needs going into the fall and winter months,” said Town officials. “We are seeing the same conditions as our neighboring communities, including Mountain Village, which enacted similar measures earlier this month.”
Effective Monday, August 25, all Town of Telluride water utility customers, including Lawson Hill, Hillside, and Sunnyside, must follow the irrigation schedule below:
• Outdoor watering is allowed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only.
• Irrigation systems must be set to 70–75% of normal water use.
• Watering hours are limited to before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
• All exterior water features must be turned off.
• Trucked-in water is prohibited from connecting to irrigation systems.
Additional water-saving practices are strongly encouraged:
• Restaurants and businesses should serve water only upon request.
• Fix leaks immediately.
• Conduct water audits and monitor bills for signs of excessive use.
Property owners with landscaping installed since spring 2024 may apply for additional watering permission. Variances for new or modified landscaping will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Public Works Department, which can be reached at 970-728-6075.
Town officials noted that if conditions worsen, stricter measures—including a ban on all exterior watering—may be implemented. If significant rainfall occurs, restrictions could be lifted.
