All of our dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies are missing something. Namely, a home and a loving family. Others are also missing something more obvious that may keep potential adopters from considering them.
Miss K, (short for Miss Kitty) is a five-year-old, orange-and-white cat who loves, loves, loves to be petted. If you meet her, you will notice she’s missing a leg. We’re not sure the story behind how she lost her leg, as she came to us already a tripod. Don’t worry, though, Miss K still gets around just fine. Truth is, she didn’t have the greatest start to life and is now looking forward to finding a forever home that will give her all the love and care she deserves.
Young short-haired tortie, Cali, came to us as a stray with an injured eye. Our wonderful veterinary team spayed her and removed her eye, setting her on the path to be a beloved pet. She is a gentle, slightly shy cat with a heart full of love. This beautiful girl might take a little time to warm up, but once she trusts you, she’ll be your quiet shadow and your softest snuggle buddy. She loves peaceful spots, gentle pets, and the kind of companionship she’ll find in a home. Her one-eyed wink isn’t just adorable; it’s a badge of her resilience! Cali is ready for a forever home where she can feel safe, loved, and appreciated for the gentle soul she is.
Hopper is a five-year-old, grey-and-white pit bull with a constant doggie smile. He may be missing a leg, but don’t tell him that – he runs, plays, and cuddles like any four-legged pup (maybe better!). With a heart as big as his tail wags, Hopper is full of charm, loyalty, and goofy energy. Whether he’s hopping through the yard or snuggling up for movie night, he’s always the happiest pup in the room. He’s great with kids, has a soft spot for peanut butter, and loves belly rubs. His resilience is inspiring, and his love is unconditional. Hopper can chase a ball like a pro, loves sunbathing on the porch, and knows how to “sit,” “stay,” and steal your heart.
While they may have the label of “special needs,” their only real need is to be loved. All three of these pets are healthy, active, and deserve caring, stable, forever homes. We hope potential adopters will consider them, as well as our senior pets (Tiger Lily, Chili Pepper), our long-term pets (Roscoe, Latte, Bailey, Emmy), or pets that need some time and patience to reveal their true personalities (Dunkin’, BK, Pepe).
As always, we’ll be here for them until their people arrive to take them home.
Update: Welcome Our New Staff Veterinarian
Dr. Hannah Coenen is originally from the Midwest, but has lived on the Front Range of Colorado, in Oregon, the Southwest, and the Southeast. She attended school at CSU in Fort Collins and graduated from veterinary school at Iowa State University in 2022.
Dr. Hannah has always been passionate about shelter medicine, providing quality care to homeless pets, and increasing access to care in underserved areas. Her goal since beginning veterinary school was to move into the field of shelter medicine.
After graduating, Dt. Hannah completed a specialty internship in shelter medicine at the University of Florida, where she learned everything from high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter to infectious disease control to shelter management. She participated in many high-volume spay/neuter clinics around the southwest, on various reservations, and in areas like the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
With several years of hands-on experience at the City of Albuquerque’s high-volume animal shelter,Dr. Hannah developed a deep understanding of veterinary care in a setting with significant need. Her time there provided extensive exposure to a wide range of medical and surgical cases, helping shape her love for surgery and wound management. These skills lend to her passion to help address the pet overpopulation crisis that affects many parts of the country.
Dr. Hannah is happy to be near Ridgway, in such a beautiful place. She is excited to help Second Chance continue to move forward and expand services for both shelter and community pets, and help decrease barriers to veterinary care.
“I am so excited to join Second Chance Humane Society! The community and beauty of Ridgway are part of what drew me here. I’m realizing how dedicated and forward-thinking the Second Chance team is, and I feel very fortunate to be a part of it. Second Chance is an outstanding organization, and I’m excited to see where we go and the impacts we continue to make in this deserving community.”
In her free time, Dr. Hannah loves long-distance trail running with her two dogs, backpacking, and rock-climbing with her partner. She also enjoys gardening, growing mushrooms, and watching her backyard chickens do weird things.
