Second Chance: 1001 Pet Columns: What’s Ahead!

Since 1994, the Animal Resource Center and the Shops of Second Chance Humane Society have been dedicated to serving animals in Southwestern Colorado. Adoption hours are every day from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The facility is located at 177 County Rd 10, Ridgway, CO. View shelter pets and services online at secondchancehumane.org.

In May and June, Murdoch’s Round Up Program supported local animal shelters. At checkout, customers could round up their purchase to help make a difference in the lives of animals in need.

Murdoch’s in Montrose designated Second Chance Humane Society as the recipient. We are thrilled to announce that Murdoch’s customers rounded up to give us nearly $6,000 in much-needed funds.

With 1000 prior entries, our blog/Pet Column has covered everything from the dangers of hot cars to why your cat might chirp at you. To kick off our next 1000 columns, we’re sharing words from our Board of Directors and Executive Director about why Second Chance is such a special organization and what we plan for the future.

Susie

Nicholas Gilman, Executive Director: I’ve enjoyed a long career in animal welfare, and I am honored to be a team member of Second Chance Humane Society. Our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters are deeply motivated to make the world a better place for animals and people.

Towards that end, we have programs that celebrate the human-animal bond, make it easier to afford veterinary care, educate the public on the humane ethic, and be a voice for all animals.

Second Chance is a very special organization with a heart and a conscience that has sustained our work for over 30 years in Southwest Colorado. I’m proud of the reputation we’ve built, the difference we make, and the excitement we have to continue and expand our work into the future.

Ashley Bradley, President, Board of Directors, Event Volunteer: I am proud to say that I have been part of Second Chance for over 15 years. A few of the words that come to mind when I think about my tenure working with Second Chance are Gratitude, Pride, and Opportunity.

I have Gratitude for all the amazing people who dedicate their time, energy, and talents to making the lives of animals and their people better every day. The staff, volunteers, and Board of Second Chance are some of the most selfless people I know. There are countless stories of people going above and beyond to positively impact animal welfare via our programs and services. Many of these stories never get told, but they happen every day.

I have immense Pride in the fact that Second Chance has always strived to do the “right thing” for the animals and people that we serve. Our staff never takes the easy way out; they always do what is best for those in our care, no matter how difficult the task.

There is still endless Opportunity for us to continue to grow our impact throughout Southwestern Colorado. Our leadership recognizes that, after 31 years, we have many opportunities ahead to expand our supportive services, grow our outreach, and impact more lives than ever before. We want to keep animals with their people, first and foremost.

Bob Hennessy, Board Member, Volunteer Dog Behaviorist: Every day, our dedicated staff, volunteers, and fosters bring our mission to life. With knowledge, compassion, and understanding, they witness true miracles and great sadness. Their commitment helps every animal start a new life feeling more valued and less vulnerable.

Second Chance is built on passion. Our 50-acre shelter and ranch serve as our hub, offering a lifeline of affordable healthcare, healthy food, and behavioral training. With our community’s help, one less animal will suffer, and one more will find warmth, health, and a loving, forever home.

We offer respect, connection, and a commitment to well-being and health. Second Chance helps families keep their beloved pets in their homes through behavior resources and pet food donations. It’s where one boy meets his new best friend to share countless adventures. Where a cat, rescued from a busy road, is reunited with a joyful family.

Our Ranch is where hope begins daily. When the vulnerable arrive, we are their immediate safety net. Every animal deserves to feel cherished, find safety, and experience comfort. We foster the human-animal bond because it strengthens all lives. We truly reflect the spirit that, as Temple Grandin said, “Animals Make Us Human.”

Chris Copeland, Board Treasurer, Dog Den Volunteer: It is often said that people are the backbone of nonprofit organizations. That is true at Second Chance Humane Society. The leadership, staff, volunteers, and donors are the heart of this wonderful charity. I see everyone’s dedication to the mission of improving the lives of animals through the human-animal bond daily, and it is truly inspirational. Second Chance has done some incredible work for the animals and residents of Southwest Colorado over the last three decades. Thanks to so many devoted individuals, we are poised to make even bigger strides and positively transform animal welfare in the region in the years to come.

Maureen Pelisson, Board Vice-President, Volunteer: Southwestern Colorado is full of animal lovers, and Second Chance Humane Society is the heart of it all. The team is passionate and dedicated, and I’ve loved meeting adopters, fosters, and volunteers who are making a difference for animals on the Western Slope.

The future is bright—from rescues and spay/neuter efforts to humane education. If you’re passing through Ridgway, stop by the shelter—it’s a special place. And if you can, get involved. Adopt, foster, volunteer, or donate—every bit helps.
