Since 2006, Second Chance has covered everything from the horrors of puppy mills to the importance of spaying and neutering, to why your dog might scoot his butt on the ground. Entries have been funny, warm, sad, and even a little bit angry. Always, we have strived to inform and enlighten pet families.

To celebrate the milestone of the 1000th post, we are sharing words from our employees about what makes Second Chance Humane Society special.

Next week, for the 1001st column, our Board of Directors and Executive Director will share their visions for the future.

Tara, Operations Manager: After nearly three years of being part of this incredible organization, I’ve witnessed firsthand how it continues to grow, evolve, and touch lives, both animal and human. What makes my job special is not just what we do, but how we do it.

We are a deeply compassionate, forward-thinking team that constantly adapts to meet the needs of our community. Whether it’s developing new programs or responding to urgent situations, we’re driven by purpose and heart. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the most dedicated, resilient, and selfless people I’ve ever met. Despite the emotional and physical challenges that come with this work, they show up every single day, fueled by a shared commitment to giving animals the Second Chance they deserve.

The animals who come through our doors are lucky, but so are we. Being part of their transformation, their healing, and their journey to a better life is a daily reminder of why our work matters. It’s more than a job, it’s a mission, and I’m so proud to lead and grow with this extraordinary team.

Kaila, Animal Care Specialist: I have worked at Second Chance for almost six months. My favorite part about working here is the dedication that our team has to these animals. I have never seen employees who are so passionate about their job. I am thankful that I get to be part of this team!

Christine, Community Outreach Supervisor: I have been at Second Chance for over 3.5 years. For me, it’s about being able to give love to the animals when they need it. We help them go from being homeless to being exceptionally loved by a new family. Our staff is here, not for the glamor of the work, but for the outcome of the work – adoptions. We are a successful organization because of the hard work and the caring, generous community that recognizes and supports us.

Gabi, Animal Care Lead: I’ve been working at Second Chance for about a year now. It has been interesting to compare this organization to my previous shelter experience.

The facility itself is beyond impressive, providing the best possible temporary housing for animals in our care while they wait for their forever homes. From the ponds and hiking trails for the dogs to the communal rooms in our cat house (that make it seem like a castle), our property has it all. While we, of course, don’t want animals staying long enough to think this is their home, it’s a sweet “hotel” for a bit.

Additionally, I truly appreciate being part of a team led by such strong women. All of us are so passionate about what we do, and it is truly inspiring to see so many leadership positions filled by women. The women I work with impress and astound me every day! I feel so grateful to have met all of them and to Second Chance for being an organization that allows women to step up and be amazing.

Second Chance allows me to thrive and grow. It encourages creativity, leadership, and brings out the best in its employees. I love being a part of this team!

Joshua, Maintenance Manager: Second Chance is successful because everyone who works here has deep compassion and love for the animals, both in the facility and in the community! Second Chance is such a special place because the work we do has a positive impact on every animal we care for and the families they join and make whole!!

Cinda, Animal Care Specialist: I have worked at Second Chance for 3 years. I love Second Chance because that’s exactly what we do: we give Second Chances! Whether the animals arrive in great health or not, we are willing to do everything we can to make them comfortable and happy!

Elizabeth, Animal Care Supervisor: I have been at Second Chance Humane Society for a year and eight months. During that time, I’ve grown so much, both personally and professionally. Being part of this organization has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

The dedicated team at Second Chance is its beating heart: compassionate, committed, and always ready to go the extra mile for the animals and the people who love them.

Second Chance prioritizes animal well-being through a thoughtful enrichment program that keeps our pets mentally and physically stimulated while they await their forever homes.

From our Pet Pantry and Community Wellness Clinic to our Rehoming and Foster Programs, Second Chance is always here to support pets and their people, especially in times of need. And its beautiful, animal-friendly property, complete with ponds and open space, gives the animals a safe and joyful environment to relax, recover, and thrive.
