On Saturday, June 28, Telluride Theatre will take over the historic Sheridan Opera House for a night of rollicking “Wild West” pageantry.
For their annual GALA fundraiser, the local non-profit is pulling inspiration from Telluride’s own history. The Opera House will be transformed into something straight out of a Spaghetti Western film. From casino games to showgirls and miners; from gourmet cuisine, to a live auction; the GALA has something for everyone.
“Telluride has a rich history, and it’s one worth celebrating,” says TT Ops Manager Kevin Douglas. “This year’s GALA is your chance, for just one night, to leave modern times behind and travel back to the Old West.”
The theme of this year’s GALA is “A Muleskinner’s Ball,” which harkens back to an actual dance thrown by the mule drivers (a.k.a. “Muleskinners”) of Telluride.
Gueests will enjoy classic western cuisine with a gourmet twist, prepared by local chef Graeme Charles of Telluride Sleighs & Wagons. Additionally, every ticket comes with drink tickets and access to different areas of the party, with an array of festivities and games to partake in.
For this happening, the Opera House will be divided into five sections. Regular ticket-holders have access to the Main, Auction and Casino Floors. VIP ticket-holders have additional access to the Speakeasy and Balcony sections, where exclusive food and cocktails will be served by actors in-character as saloon workers.
The Casino Floor will feature classic games like roulette, craps, poker and blackjack. (No real gambling is allowed – but a GALA ticket comes with faux playing chips!)
Guests will also get to enjoy live musical entertainment on the Sheridan stage, including a sneak peek of CASSIDY, a new musical premiering this December as part of Telluride Theatre’s Main Stage season.
Live and silent auctions will have a wide variety of prizes for sale, including Gordon Collection earrings, a personalized Palm movie night, a group horseback “Ride with Roudy,” and much more.
Inspiration for this year’s GALA theme was pulled from an archived 1912 article from The San Miguel Examiner:
“Last night the ‘Mule Skinners’ of Telluride gave one of the best dances of the season at the Opera House. The hall was crowded and people who attended represented every walk of life… John Segentbaler prepared a swell dinner, and everything was gotten up just right.”
Telluride Theatre has committed to bringing the community together in fun and unique ways for over 35 years. The GALA is a major fundraiser for the non-profit. Proceeds from the event support their year-round performances and educational programs.
“This is a very important fundraiser for Telluride Theatre and a great way to support ongoing education programs and community events in town,” explains Artistic Director Sasha Cucciniello. “We’ve prepared an incredible night of gourmet food, entertainment, and fun.”
