He looks at you with complete adoration. He sees none of your flaws and forgives you when you don’t fulfill a promise. Whether you’re late coming home or you just walked to the mailbox, he is happy when you return. Scratch him behind the ears or rub his tummy, and the love pours out of him with a wag, a lick, a butt-wiggle, or a deep, contented sigh. If only you could find a human partner who looks at you the same way.

A good dog is a constant. The connection is quiet,  intuitive, joyful, and exuberant. When you need someone, a good dog knows and shows love by sitting beside you. When you’re tired, sick, depressed, or angry, a dog will mirror your emotions and often give you the support you need. If you’re happy, your dog will join you in a happy dance around the kitchen. Love isn’t just a word to describe what we feel – it is an unshakable bond.

When people express that they are “in love” with their dog, non-dog people are usually skeptical. It’s “just a dog”. Pity these naysayers, for they are missing out on one of the most gratifying kinds of love. Many of us have experienced the grief of losing a beloved dog, and it’s as devastating as losing a relative or a friend.

While we can’t question if we love our dogs, do our dogs love us back? While we are using a human lens to define if and how our dog feels, it’s indisputable that they do feel a bond. A dog will strongly prefer their person to any other, will seek out physical closeness, and demonstrate a connection that’s as real as any other connection.

We’re not saying human and dog love are identical. But, science, emotion, and just experience tell us that there is enough similarity between how dogs form strong emotional bonds and how people form strong emotional bonds that it’s fair enough to call it love.

Author Carolyn Knapp wrote: “Before you get a dog, you can’t quite imagine what living with one might be like; afterward, you can’t imagine living any other way.”

From now until February 16, all adoption fees are half-off at Second Chance Humane Society.
