As we watch the devastation in Southern California, we are thinking of the people, their beloved pets, and the wildlife.

Fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes… We live in a world where natural disasters happen all too often. We all must face the “what if” scenarios and make a plan. Messages of preparedness are everywhere, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. There are key things to do in case you are in a disaster situation – and don’t forget your pets in your plan.

Here are some tips on how to protect your pets and be equipped to take your them with you if you must evacuate your home.

Many emergency shelters or hotels do not admit pets, so it is important to find places in advance that do. Search now for local and out-of-area pet-friendly hotels. Also, check out boarding facilities, or make a housing exchange agreement with an out-of-area friend or relative.

If you are not home when an evacuation is ordered, make sure you have a plan with friends or neighbors to evacuate your pets. Exchange keys, give your friend your pets’ medical information, and share your emergency contact information.

Having an emergency kit assembled and ready for each pet is essential. It’s recommended to have two kits, one larger kit for sheltering in place and one lightweight version for evacuations. Review your kits regularly to ensure that the contents, especially foods and medicines, are fresh. A kit should include (in an airtight waterproof container): several days’ supply of food; a water bowl; a supply of water; medicine your pet takes regularly; a first aid kit; a collar with an ID tag; a harness or leash; a crate or sturdy carrier (ideally one for each pet); grooming items; sanitation needs (waste bags, pet litter, and litter box); and favorite toys, treats or bedding.

In case your pet is lost in an evacuation or disaster, make sure he or she is microchipped. Be sure to update your microchip registration when you move, change phone numbers, get a new emergency contact, or change veterinary clinics. In addition, keep an ID tag on your pets’ collars. Take photos of you with your pets so you can prove ownership if you are separated.

This all can seem overwhelming and stressful, but if you are faced with a disaster, your dear pets will be part of your plan. Start by doing one small thing today. Take one action that contributes to your readiness and encourage others to do the same.

For a more complete list of ways to be prepared, visit the ASPCA or Humane Society of the United States for tips and lists.

If you’d like to help humane organizations in California, we recommend that you donate directly to the local organizations of your choice. If you are concerned that your donation wouldn’t get to the places where it would do the most good, you can donate to Second Chance Humane Society and indicate that your gift should go to the California Fires.

We will ensure that 100 percent of any gifts received by Second Chance for the fires will go to local organizations in the affected areas. Second Chance will not donate to just one organization, but will instead provide your gifts to a variety of organizations we know are affected by the fires.

Donate on our homepage or by sending a check to PO Box 2096, Ridgway, CO, 81432 (please indicate you’d like your donation to go to California Fire Relief).

Manny

Manny is a young, grey, tabby boy with green eyes. His foster mom is going on vacation, so we’d LOVE to find him a home so he doesn’t have to return to the shelter. Please call (970)626-2273 or email foster@secondchancehumane.org to arrange to meet this wonderful cat. Manny is cute, quirky, and loves chin scratches. He gets the zoomies and is an avid string chaser and wand toy stalker. When not playing, Manny is happy to curl up on a warm lap. He has an old leg injury that occasionally causes him to limp or lift his leg- but it doesn’t hold him back!
