What happens when a career-bound college graduate stumbles upon a ski town in the 90’s? For Johnny Stardust, everything changes and his life takes a new course. But he soon learns that ski town life isn’t all powder days and parties. As the town faces challenges from over development, local ski bums need to find a way to keep the dream alive.

“SKI BUM” is Lionel Starr’s first play. (You may know him by his “rap name” LIF TKT.):

“I’ve always loved the ski bum culture, and I love the honesty and confidence of the rap culture. When you combine the two, it seems to create a whole new dynamic, the clashing of very different worlds. But it works. For some reason when I moved to Telluride and started skiing a lot, I began to write stupid songs about skiing. They were mostly raps, and I would usually just sing them on the chairlift or at apres. Then I hit up my friend, TM Faversham, who was making beats at the time, and we collaborated on a recording of ‘Whiter than a Powder Day.’ We performed that number at the KOTO Lip Sync contest in 2006 and it was well received.I then went on to turn some of those songs into music videos and put them out to the world via Yout Tube.”

“Lionel came to work with Telluride Theatre in 2022 on our holiday musical. He told me about his dream of writing this musical. When I shared it with Melissa Trn, our Producing Director, she insisted we do it. Lionel has truly thrown himself into this process and has made his dream a reality,” explains Sasha Cucciniello, Artistic Director.

Lionel adds: “This has been an incredible process and I can’t believe we’re really making this happen. It’s something totally different for me, and it has forced me to write songs in all sorts of genres. But with help from Sasha, Ethan Hale, and this entire cast and crew, I believe we’ve created something truly special. I hope to see everyone there!”

“SKI BUM The Musical” is a truly local production in keeping with Telluride Theatre’s goal of creating community and fostering new talent.

“We are an educational theatre. Bringing together never-evers – people who have never done theatre – with people who are trained and true professionals. That has proven to be magic process featuring a new playwright and many newbies on stage and behind the scenes. It has been so fun working with everyone. Telluride Theatre is a space of community, gathering, and fun and this show is the embodiment of all that.” Sasha explains.

What’s more, Telluride Theatre is also offering a new program: “PAY WHAT YOU CAN!”

“We are so excited to offer this new program to those who need it. And plan to do this for shows throughout the year. We believe art and theater should be accessible to EVERYONE!” Sasha adds.
