16 Dec Telluride Science & Original Thinkers: “Film for Thought,” A New Series, Starts 12/17!
Telluride Science and Original Thinkers are partnering on “Film for Thought,” a series of compelling screenings and presentations. Screenings take place this winter at the new home of Telluride Science, the Innovation Center (formerly The Depot). The focus of “Film for Thought” is to bring the Telluride community together in pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the complicated time we are living in through the power of story and film.
Series kicks off Tuesday, December 17, 5:30-7:30 pm with a screening of “Counted Out.” That is followed by a Zoom conversation with the director and film characters, moderated by David Holbrook, Director, Original Thinkers. The event is free and open to the public.

“Math is power.” That phrase is the tag line of a new documentary “Counted Out,” currently making the rounds at festivals and community screenings. (The doc will have a limited theatrical release next year.)
“Counted Out” explores the intersection of mathematics, civil rights and democracy. It also delves into how an understanding of math, or lack thereof, affects society’s ability to deal with the most pressing challenges and crises — health care, climate, misinformation, elections,” wrote The New York Times. “When we limit access to the power of math to a select few, we limit our progress as a society,” said Vicki Abeles, the film’s director and a former Wall Street lawyer…”
“Original Thinkers and Telluride Science make terrific partners because we share a deep curiosity about the world, and our film series will reflect that,” said Holbrooke. “We are still putting our program together for the season and are so excited to start off with ‘Counted Out.’ This important movie about math literacy screened at Original Thinkers 2024 and created a tremendous buzz. We had many audience members asking how they could share it, so we are thrilled to bring ‘Counted Out’ back to Telluride.”
Digging deeper, “Counted Out” explores our growing dependence on algorithms and the unseen power of numbers in daily life, weaving personal stories with a call to strengthen math literacy in a rapidly changing world.
Mark Kozak, Executive Director of Telluride Science, echoes Holbrooke’s sentiment:
“Partnering with Original Thinkers is a natural fit for Telluride Science because we share a commitment to sparking curiosity and fostering meaningful dialogue. With the Innovation Center at the Depot as our home, we’re excited to open our doors to the community for stimulating programs that inspire new ideas and fresh perspectives.”
The series is, again free and open to the public. It will be held the third Tuesday of the month at the Innovation Center. Dates include January 21, February 18, March 18. Donations to Telluride Science and Original thinkers are welcome.
“We are facing enormous societal challenges and know that more than ever, original thinking is needed to take these on. Storytelling and innovation are going to be key to that process, so this collaboration between Original Thinkers and Telluride Science could not be more timely, “ concluded Holbrooke.
