Talking Gourds: Telluride “Stories & Poems,” 12/29!

“Stories & Poems Telluride” concludes its live segment in Telluride with a poetry performance and a gourds circle. The event takes place Sunday, December 29, 4-7 pm, at two venues: Telluride Arts HQ and across Colorado Avenue at Mangala Yoga/Viceroy Café. Montrose’s Paulo Munguia and a friend will read poems in Spanish and English, alternating lines in each language, while Trout Lake’s own Peter Waldor shares poems from his many books.

A collaboration of the Lone Cone Library and the Telluride Institute’s Talking Gourds poetry program, “Stories & Poems Norwood” is free and open to all ages, thanks to the generosity of the library, a Town of Telluride CCAASE grant, private donors and Talking Gourds’ Fischer and Cantor poetry contests.

The gourds circle segment in the yoga studio following the performance has a theme of “Winter Driving.” Participants can merely listen and pass the gourd but are encouraged to bring stories and poems (their own or poets they like) on the theme — or on any topic they choose. This is a chance for everyone in attendance to participate in a relaxed, supportive environment.

“Paulo has read in Norwood, and we’re excited to hear poems in Spanish and English in Telluride,” explained Art Goodtimes, Talking Gourds director. “Peter is a former San Miguel County Poet Laureate (2014-16), is widely published, has won awards and is an outstanding performer.”

The free program starts with a one-hour performance at the Telluride Arts venue, and then moves across Colorado Ave. to Mangala Yoga and the Viceroy Café, where, after some warm-up drinks, participants will remove shoes to enter the yoga studio and then meet in a Gourd Circle. Participants are encouraged to bring their own pillows, although there will be zafus and blankets available at the studio as well.

“’Stories & Poems’ Telluride has run the month of December, as we start bringing live poetry akd storytelling back to town post-Pandemic,” explained Goodtimes. “After a break for January and February, we are looking at possibly returning with a four-week burst of readings, similar to this, in March. Stay tuned on Telluride Arts and Talking Gourds websites.”
