At Second Chance, our wish list won’t be fulfilled by Santa or any other mythical character. While we always need “stuff” for the shelter and our animals, this season we’re wishing for other things.
We wish people wanted to adopt big dogs, black dogs, bully dogs, project dogs, and old dogs as much as small dogs and puppies.
Dogs like Petey, a five-year-old staffie/pit bull weighing almost 80 pounds. At first glance, he might seem intimidating, but he is a goofball, lovebug, butt-wiggling sweetheart. He has been with us for over four months and has had very little interest. He isn’t a fan of other dogs, lived with kids successfully, and would be a wonderful addition to a family.
Or dogs like Roscoe- who is our longest-term resident. Recently, he’s been with a trusted foster family learning what it means to live in a home. He’s not too big, is a shepherd mix, smart as a whip, and very handsome. But, he is a complicated dog. He needs structure, leadership, and clear boundaries. Our dog behaviorist, Bob, will provide pre-adoption screening, and three private sessions for his new family.
We wish older cats, tabby cats, black cats, and shy cats were adopted as quickly as kittens, calicos, and white cats.
Cats like Lilypad and Nugget. Lilypad was surrendered to us to ensure she would be cared for after her beloved person passes on. While it was a loving and responsible action, it also came with heartbreak. Lilypad misses her mom, her mom is worried she will not find a perfect new home, and we are hoping someone will step up and adopt this beautiful kitty soon. She will need some time and patience to adjust.
Nugget is a seven-year-old grey cat who has not had a single person visit and show interest in him. He would be best in an adult home.
Or cats like Dean and Tulip. Both are under two-years-old and have lived their whole lives in our care. They have been overlooked so far.
Dean is a black short-haired boy, and Tulip is shy. Given a chance, they will thrive in a home.
We wish more cats and dogs were spayed and neutered.
It breaks our hearts when puppies and kittens show up on our doorstep after someone dumped them on a rural road or a kind person found them under a porch. Whether it’s a community cat colony, a backyard breeder, or an irresponsible pet owner, the population of unwanted animals can be controlled.
We wish you would visit us!
We welcome volunteers, visitors, and potential adopters during our shelter hours. Don’t worry that we’ll pressure you to adopt or give – we won’t! We just want to let the world know that our gates and doors are open to visitors – and we’d love to introduce you to our cats, dogs, and people!
