Fahey’s experience in environmental law and land use is well-suited for her new position. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Lewis & Clark Law School with a Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law. Along the way, she clerked for Earthrise Law and served as Student Director and Water Group Coordinator for the Northwest Environmental Defense Center, among other accolades and membership in the Cornelius Honor Society.
After graduation, Fahey worked for Crag Law in Portland as managing attorney where her cases included, among others, representation of clients as lead counsel in complex public interest litigation and administrative proceedings involving a variety of federal laws, and state and local laws regarding land use, administrative matters, environmental review, water rights and water quality laws.
Fahey threw her hat in the ring with an eye to new challenges and the prospect of living in the mountains.
“Ever since leaving Colorado after completing my undergraduate degree at CU Boulder, I had my sights set on returning to Colorado someday,” Fahey said. “I have visited Telluride regularly over the past 16 years and had only dreamed of being able to live here someday. I was thrilled to accept the opportunity to serve as San Miguel County’s next County Attorney, not only to live in this amazing place, but also to grow my career into a new area of practice and to bring my existing expertise to a position in public service.”
Fahey will not only see to the day-to-day operations of government such as contract review and legal advice to the Board of County Commissioners but will also oversee a number of cases in which the County is currently involved.
“We are so excited to have Maura join our team,” said County Manager, Mike Bordogna. “She comes with extensive experience in the field of environmental protection, which is one of our county’s hallmarks. Her background, interests and personality are a great fit for the culture and values that San Miguel County has developed. ”
Fahey takes the reins from former County Attorney, Amy Markwell, who took employment closer to her family. Markwell served the County for 8 years.
